The operative word for me is "earn."

I may look young, but I first paid my dues before moving up. It's been a 14-year from a street-smart, natural born leader to a book-smart, and while my helped, it was the of the Hard Knocks that prepared me the corporate world.

I ALWAYS knew I was destined for something greater, even when the naysayers counted me out.

Reflecting on my July 2019 post, I had just accepted my new job. I started fearful of the unknown, but remained driven and optimistic about my future. I knew I had plenty to offer (creativity, innovation, strategy, and leadership) and worried if it would be reciprocated.

I earned my first promotion within 9 months, which put my mind at ease. Then, I got more specific about the goals on my vision board last year.

After earning my certification, I earned a second promotion to Regional Director of Human Resources now, in less than 2.5 years.

And I'm not done yet! My new goals are loading... and in the meantime...

Believe it or not, I'm a little shy when it comes to social media. I push through because I have a passion for business and entrepreneurship and a calling to help them succeed through stronger leadership at all levels of the organization.

My emphasis lies with the leaders, especially new leaders, as they mold employees' daily and strategic activities to achieve the company's goals. Often, when you see high turnover and/or low morale, there is a direct correlation to management. Hence, The Career Puff, where I show people their superpowers.

Stop being scared to coach your staff!

As an HR leader, I've had to address poor hygiene, redirect low performers and confront office bullies.

1. Employees deserve the opportunity to adjust and improve their performance before being terminated. (Unless it's egregious or illegal)

2. It's YOUR job as a leader is to set expectations and correct unacceptable patterns.

3. We have a national labor shortage and need to invest in the staff we have.

Treat your staff right, or someone else will!

A part of my role as a Regional Human Resources Manager is to oversee recruitment. My team recruits for 18 locations nationwide, and we manage over 100 requisitions daily, where more than 3/4 are a high priority. The work is cyclical and though I'm sure they grow weary, you'd never know because they do it all with a smile.

Today, I took them for a tour of one of our newer facilities to deepen their understanding of our company's operations and to give them a break from the office. I invited my VP, we had a nice lunch with the senior leaders and took a few pictures.

While leaving, I told them how much I appreciate their work and gave them each a gift. They aren't Rolexes, but I took time to find something I knew they'd love and they were grateful.

How many of you have worked for someone who won't even say, "thank you?" Well the era where that is tolerated is long GONE.

You have to treat your people right, or someone else will.

Show your team It's OK to take a day off.

Personally, I don't regard my employee's requests as optional, but more of a courtesy, as long as it's done with a respectful amount of notice of course. I consider all the time they invested into making plans, the celebrations that might ensure and I remember they are adults, with lives.

My : Even if the workload gets heavy, once you've approved time off, leave it BE! Or else, your staff might join the 4.3 million people who quit their jobs last month.

I learned this is how Mexicans, and others in Latin countries, say "salud" or "cheers." The literal translation is "up," "down," "center," "inside," but in custom, it means "to my friends"... you are never above me, never below me, never away from me and always with me.
