Happy to share a work done recently related to Corrosion.
PROBLEM:
A client approached with a problem in which the multiple welding joints attached with static structure like Grills and windows on one side and concrete pillar on other side, were fractured and separated because of material loss which is inherently due to atmospheric and stress corrosion in an industry.
The main cause which lead to this failure:
• Stress because of inappropriate welding since, the mild steel part was welded in tension.
• Atmospheric Corrosion
CONSULTATION PROVIDED:
1) To identity all the welding joints which are welded in tension and then weld them in appropriate position so that there is no stress left and give sufficient fixtures while welding so that no residual stresses is left within the part.
2) To counter corrosion, every mild steel part show in picture show be cleaned first with the help of wire brush as the part was small and then use of red oxide as first layer then use of acrylic paint as second layer and then final layer of Hydrophobing agent - TEGO Phobe 1650 from Evonik was recommended for long service life.
