Presented by ICIA and AstaGuru as part of Asian Art in London 2026, the exhibition examines the uncertainties that exist within familiar spaces and everyday relationships. Bringing the personal into dialogue with the historical and the intimate with the political, Vattakuzhy’s works invite reflection on the changing conditions that shape individual lives.

In Tom Vattakuzhy’s paintings, instability emerges within the most ordinary spaces of life - a family gathered in a room, a child reaching towards something beyond its grasp, a woman standing at the threshold of her home, or two figures sharing a landscape while remaining apart.

Shifting Ground brings together paintings that hold seemingly opposing conditions in proximity: young and old, light and dark, movement and stillness, intimacy and distance, tenderness and violence.

These oppositions are not resolved. Instead, they coexist within the same image, allowing the personal to become inseparable from the historical, and the intimate from the political.
