This is the second part of the two part blog Human Story of Chhotu - The Logistics Startup. Here I write about The Present & Future of Chhotu, its challenges, the environment, the business model and my humble analysis. Actually the analysis is really a collection of one-liners that were validated for me, somewhat, as truths about our Startup World. Its back to the blogging board for me!

(Part 1 Here) Today & the Future Chhotu today has over 160 employees, with 11 warehouses and is present in 9 major cities across India. It does over 1000 transactions a day and though I don’t w...

My latest post on 10 Lessons learnt thanks to Facebook's acquisition of Instagram. The twittersphere, blogosphere and even the stratosphere has been chattering continuously about this deal for the past 3-4 days. In fact, except for about 30 to 45 mins (thanks to the tsunami scare), this topic was the most discussed and analyzed topic over the last week in the virtual world. Also my apologies for updating my blog with such infrequency. Hope you enjoy this analysis of what I learnt from this Billion Dollar Deal.

It was the equivalent of a hurricane that hits a barn on a sunny Sunday spring morning without warning. It shook up the Startup world and has probably changed the ecosystem for years to come. Monda...

My entire life I thought that I was a 'Great' multi-tasker, however I recently realised that in many cases my ability to multi-task was really pulling me back in finishing things off. My limited research into this and my interviews with various entrepreneurs led me to believe that not only is this an inefficient way of doing work and running a startup, it is also an organizational and health hazard. Read and enjoy my latest post on how our perception of multi-Tasking makes us inefficient, unhappy, unaccomplished and unhealthy.

We are in a fantastic age. Unlike the past centuries, our heroes aren’t generals, revolutionaries, statesmen, politicians, scientists, editors, doctors or writers (to an extent). Today pop...

We usually don't hear of Small Indian businesses and Startups being sold off by their promoters. While there are a number of inherent market issues and our skewed perception because of comparisons with the red hot US/EU market for Startup M&As, a number of issues also exist with the way Indian Startups and Small Businesses are structured. My latest post is based on the must read book 'Built to Sell' by John Warrillow on great simple lessons on how to make your business 'sale-able'.

I really love this book. If you haven’t read it by now, then you should soon enough (Click on the picture for the Flipkart page). John Warrillow narrates a simple story about a person (like y...

Over the last few weeks I have been helping out a few friends with their pitch presentations. They have recently left their jobs to run their own startup and like every new organization, are perennially short staffed and short skilled. While making the pitch decks for them I decided to put my learnings and views in my next post since a number of us fail at pitching with Powerpoint. Enjoy!

We spend a great deal of our lives delivering pitches. From cajoling parents to give us more money, begging teachers for more marks, haggling with the auto guy, requesting the cop to let us go, ple...

Today's Blog post borrows heavily from my time as a bartender during Graduation. In retrospect I realize that I learnt a number of lessons about how to run my own place/startup from intense experiences behind the bar. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did writing about it.

I was fresh behind the ears and had an empty wallet.Nay! I had no wallet. My first few months at IHM Pusa were spent day dreaming about how kick-ass my future in the hotels is going to be. As freshe...

My latest post is a practical set of things you must Never Say during a VC presentation. Sometimes knowing what not to say is more important that knowing what to present. Based on a number of first and second hand experiences (Some where I was the erring party... sob sob) this is one post that I am sure will come in handy for those of you who are revving to get funded or are going to enter B Plan competitions.

Here is a list of things never to say during a VC Presentation 1. Everyone is our customer - This is never ever true. Figure out the Market Size and your customer demographics. Give numbers and...

With an imminent shift to Delhi from Mumbai, the last weekend was spent hunting for houses instead of writing all those blog posts in my head... though I think the lazy Delhi winter was more to blame for my inactivity. Today I list down a number of Billion Dollar startups which many of you haven't heard about. Though the list if neither comprehensive nor complete, it gives you a good picture of the kind of ideas and startups killing it in today's VC world. I promise to make up for the weekend with my next couple of blog posts.

A lot of people keep asking me to put up a list of 1 Billion $ valuation startups. I kept it pending for one of those days when I felt really lazy or had nothing interesting to write about. T...

My Second post of the Business Plan Series. This one is about how there are 3 different types of Business Plans and what they are all about. I hope to write more in this series as a number of you have been bugging me on what exactly to put in a Business Plan. Hoping to write a truly exciting post tomorrow!

A business plan, in essence, is part blueprint of your business and part sales pitch for those reading it. This is true for lenders, investors, stakeholders and employees. However, each perso...

This post was written many weeks back and then conveniently forgotten till I met a good friend and entrepreneur today. He has been struggling with his P&L and Balance Sheet for years now. Poor guy is a Hotel Management passout, just like me and was on the verge of murdering his CA...simply because he got confused with the simplest concept in Finance. Profit. Here I write about the 3 Profits - Gross, Operating and Net.

Ever had the feeling when you think you know something, because it’s so simple in theory, until one day you don't because you have to put it in practice? Like knowing how to make an omelette...

This one is for those of you looking for funding and investments for your Startup. Its real important to understand "The Burn Rate' and its implications. Most serial entrepreneurs and Venture Capital firms swear by its usage. It is well documented that most Startups fail due to a lack of funds and this metric helps in measuring the cash and growth status of your Startup, for you and your investors.

I walked into a swanky hotel lobby for a meeting with an ‘aspirant’ VC. I had no idea what to expect because when I got a call from him (Lets just call him New Boy) I had never heard of the guy...

I know this one is a little late. But here it is. Flipkart acquired Letsbuy last week for about $25 to $30 Million. Yay!! But what does it mean for the future of eCommerce and Startups in India. How does this change things? And how does it affect the thousands out there who harbor dreams of having a Startup, especially an eCommerce one. Let me know what you think!

Let’s look at the facts first1. Flipkart, India's most successful eCommerce company and definitely the most talked about one, reportedly worth $1 Billion, acquired one of its biggest competitors ...
