Designing Krishna’s costumes for Krishnavataram was about finding the balance between divinity, detail and simplicity.

Every element, from the drapes to the jewellery and headgear, was considered carefully. The intention was to create a look that carried the presence and grandeur of Krishna while keeping it rooted in the visual language of our scriptures.

The colours, textures and handcrafted details came together to create a look that felt timeless, regal and true to the world of Krishnavataram.

The Raas Leela was one of the most exciting sequences to design for Krishnavataram. At the initial stage, we were still imagining how the choreography would come together. We explored the idea of a water body, with the dancers forming the petals of one enormous lotus. That became the inspiration for the ombre pinks across their costumes.

For Radha, we looked to the peacock, keeping Vrindavan in mind. The navy blues, peacock greens and teals were chosen to bring contrast and drama to her look, while giving it a painterly quality.

What was important was that the costumes didn’t exist in isolation. They had to work with the choreography, the colours of the set and the entire visual composition to bring the scene together.

Devi Rukmini, an avatar of Mata Lakshmi, called for a costume language that carried piety, authority and dignity. From carefully considered silhouettes to a palette that shifted between deeper, authoritative tones and softer shades, every choice reflected a different side of her.

For her wedding, gold was chosen from head to toe, symbolising wealth, prosperity and her divine association with Mata Lakshmi. The intention was to create a look that felt celestial and ethereal on screen, befitting the wedding of Krishna and Rukmini.

Jambvanti’s look in Krishnavataram was designed to stand apart from the other queens. The raw, oxidised silver toned jewellery, elaborate headpiece, layered necklaces and earthy drapes reflected her origins as the princess of the bear clan. Every detail was developed to bring together her royal identity and her connection to the wild.

Behind every elaborate costume is a long process of making, detailing and finishing.

For Zhaoge, the armour involved extensive surface detailing, sculpted elements and intricate headgear, all brought together to create a strong warrior silhouette.

A look from Zhaoge, a fantasy historical Chinese saga based on the Ming dynasty and one of The NY Studio’s international projects.

This look brings together a dramatic black silhouette, deep red layers and intricate gold embroidery, with detailing carried across the sleeves, neckline, belt and front panels.
