A look back at Bhishma’s costume look tests from Mahabharat.
The clean whites, ivory and silver were chosen to reflect his vow of renunciation, wisdom and detachment, while the antique gold and rich Kuru detailing brought in his royal lineage and position within Hastinapur.

The layered white robes and heavy dhotis were paired with an ornate silver-toned kavach, pauldrons and bajuband, giving him the presence of a seasoned warrior. His tall silver and gold mukut, pearls, uncut stones and traditional jewellery added to the stature of the Kuru patriarch.

And then came the details that really completed him, the flowing grey-white hair and long white beard, bringing together his age, wisdom and formidable presence.

The idea was always to make Bhishma feel like both the ascetic and the warrior, the elder and the commander. Looking back at these early tests, it’s interesting to see how that character slowly took shape through costume.

The artists that almost made it as Draupadi.
Look tests are an important part of the costume design process. Before a costume is finally approved, different silhouettes, colours, fabrics, jewellery, drapes and details are tried on the actor to see how the complete look translates on camera.

Deep reds and sinduri tones reflected Draupadi’s fiery origin, while lotus-inspired jewellery, red stones and ancient Indian drapes helped build her distinct visual identity as a royal queen and warrior.

A look back at Draupadi’s costume look tests from Mahabharat.

Draupadi’s costumes were developed around a rich, regal colour palette, layered drapes and detailed surface work. The colours were chosen to give her presence without making the costumes feel heavy, while the fabrics and borders added depth and movement to every look.

The jewellery was designed as an extension of the costume. We explored distinctive motifs, structured forms, stones and gold detailing to create pieces that felt rooted in an Indian aesthetic while giving Draupadi her own visual identity. Neckpieces, earrings, armlets, waist pieces and hair ornaments were all developed as part of the complete look rather than added as accessories later.

Looking back at Gandhari’s costumes for Mahabharat.

We wanted her three looks to tell different parts of her story. In Gandhar, before her marriage, the costumes drew from the geography and culture of the land. Coarser textures, deeper earthy tones and, most importantly, turquoise. Gandhar, present-day Kandahar, is historically associated with the abundance of turquoise in the region, so we brought that into her jewellery and surface detailing.

Once Gandhari moves to Hastinapur, her visual language changes. The textures become richer, the palette shifts and the turquoise gradually gives way to the opulence and visual vocabulary of the Hastinapur royal court. Even her sleep attire was approached as a separate costume. Softer, quieter and designed for a completely different part of her life.

What makes looking back at these images even more special is remembering how we actually created them 14 years ago. There was no AI, no Photoshop, no Coreldraw, no iPads. A lot of the work happened on paper, by hand through sketches, fabric samples, books, conversations and honestly, a great deal of imagination and the faith of a director and producer in a designer’s vision. And perhaps that is what makes these old look tests so special to revisit.
