IAPathways Student-Athlete Mentoring Programmes

IAPathways Student-Athlete Mentoring Programmes We double the odds of their engagement in their academic and sporting pursuits and well being.

The mission of the student-athlete mentoring programme is to better prepare and integrate students, parents and coaches for sporting/academic goals and social life. We support the most potent elements linked to long term success for student athletes, so that they feel that they have a mentor who made them excited about learning, who encouraged them to pursue their goals and dreams and supported them emotionally through their stages of development.

Tough for parents to find the middle ground between the two extremes of everyone's a winner vs. winning is everything. Both approaches give the illusion of winning at a young age as if the result or the trophy matters. Very few kids are taught to learn, to love and trust the process, and even fewer parents can stand to watch their kids learn from failure. Winning and the illusion of winning is much easier.

The word "Winning" should not be used in a competitive context at 12&U.

You win every time you achieve or replicate something you have worked on in coaching or hitting sessions.

Competition is useful to measure where you are, trial and error, learn to solve problems, compete and work on areas of development. Winning should be low on the priority of a developing player.

Preparing now to be a "WINNER" in the future.

We get asked all the time "what is the single best thing a parent and coach can do for a young athlete?" Our answer is simple: help them fall in love with the sport. Only then will they take ownership and play long enough to get any good at it. Please share if you agree, and if not, what would your answer be ?

Master handling Insecurities , Adaptation to New Conditions and Building Relationships :

It requires courage to take the route of adventure. The path will be more insecure than secure, but once an individual learns adaptation, one begins to gradually master it, and then the real journey of adventure through its highs and lows, keeps challenging them to strive for excellence ....

Let your kids find their own sports passions.

Our founder, and a parent of 2 athlete students , who live to play a sport every day ....

" It's not our job as parents to discover what our children are passionate about. That job belongs to them. We need to focus on their interests and try not to impose our own. After all, one of the best gifts we can give our children is to allow them to find what truly makes them smile." 😊 Rest will fall in place !

Placing the student at the center of the education process is our method.

The guiding philosophy of our mentorship is the central role of the student and his or her abilities in relation to the acquisition of knowledge.

The objective is to create an effective and solid working methodology in all areas to encourage greater autonomy and responsibility.

Finally, we also endeavour to create a positive mindset, to ensure the united pursuit of a shared objective in an excellent group atmosphere between the team of coaches and parents we work with .

1)Long Term Athletic & Tennis Development of the specific athlete must be considered when formulating the year round oppurtuinity when considering for international training teams, competition and developmental approaches.

2) Athletes and parents should visit to their top choices of training setups and review the training team and see how they feel.

3)Consider varying aspects within the academy: team, support, terrain, motivation, injury managememt, access to higher level of competition and better level of play on a daily basis.

4) Region with least distraction to maintain focus for the purpose.

5) Setup which has a high conditions of discipline and management to keep the players in check.

6) Then make a 4 year decision, for it will impact the next 40 years of how the athlete / student will shape up.

7) Remember it's a 40 year decision within a 4 year decision, so it's important to be wise with your resources.

8) Then compare based on your experiences and other parameters that are important for the family.

DO NOT FEAR CHANGE !

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE A DECISION UNLESS YOU HAVE TRIED & TESTED YOUR TOP CHOICES. BELIEVE ONLY YOUR EXPERIENCE !

WHAT IS EFFECTIVE COACHING & MENTORING ?

It is the ability to help the pupil(s) acquire a new or modified behaviour, either mentally, physically or both. Effective coaching ultimate goals in my opinion are:

1. To help increase the players competence
2. To enhance the players enjoyment and satisfaction of their sport.
3. To help the player develop as a person through sport.
4. To help them understand the relevance and importance of values that will be the compass that guides them through their journey into the direction of goals and dreams.

Work with the Student Not On the Student!

A working relationship is built upon a partnership that respects the persons expertise and perspectives. It is based around the belief that the resources and motivation to change lie within the person and a nurturing of the persons right and capacity for self-determination.

Students tend to change more easily if the change comes from within each one of us, student, parent rather than being forced upon them by the coach or parent.

A method I have used all the while !

The difference between permanent change and temporary improvements revolve around the coaches / mentors ability to draw improvement out of the player rather than instilling into the player !!

The Pathway of Courage

“What do you believe is the secret to producing successful young tennis players” ?

Different things, all which can only improve tennis and maybe win Regional tournaments/national tournaments or even International tournaments.

However my answer as a mentor, is now blindingly obvious the true secret to success is COURAGE !

The courage to dream big. The courage to ignore all those people who tell you that what you’re doing is impossible, those people that judge you to others and make comparisons. Even your own negative, limiting inner thoughts and beliefs. The courage to approach key people that you will need to help you on the way. The courage to plan and repeat great deliberate practice often for many, many years. The courage to commit to what you love doing to your entire life, and also the courage to say NO so nothing comes between you and your dream.

The courage to be honest that you are truly doing enough, and not just going through the motions. The courage to deal with setbacks and failings, then wake up the next morning and get back on the practice court. The courage to have patience on and off the court and having the discipline to keep doing what works. Then the courage to remain humble and not get complacent when you start to succeed.

Courage is the most important emotion you need to learn to control in your life and tennis.

For example, the score is 6-5 in the final set and your serving at 40-30 and you are on the verge of winning a national title and your opponent is somebody you have never bet, and your opponent’s coach is standing on the side of the court that has always indicating that his “player” is better than you. For you to find your “go to” serve and execute it well you need courage.

Many tennis players experience times when they struggle. It is then that they must have the courage to be patient and keep moving forwards and keep trusting, investing, practising and performing to keep the dream alive. Often at this point many give up.

However those who hang in there have the courage to push through the hard times can end up succeeding beyond their deepest expectations.

Here are my Courage Pathway principles try rating yourself out of 10, if it’s not a 10 you now have a challenge!!

1. EMBRACE FAILING- by pushing limits and live on the edge of your potential, not short of it (empty the tank)

2. DEVELOP VALUES & CHARACTER : Values of such as Honesty/Hard Working/ Positive Attitude/Humbleness are key characteristics for tennis & life.

3. DELIBERATE PRACTICE/PLANNING AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL- If your dream is to become a world class tennis player what does a world class player look like? Watch videos and create a blueprint in your mind, and seek a great coach to help you develop those tools

4. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY/BE ACCOUNTABLE- Here are some golden rules on this principle/

a) Be honest with yourself and others- no excuses
b) Do what you believe is right, never give up! And no whining
c) You generate your own proof that you are good enough to reach your dream, don’t seek reassurance
d) Give everything to the dream and expect nothing in return.

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them”

The impact of sports for me has affected my whole life as a mother - from being a disciplined parent, goal setting, learning the value of team, seeking knowledge to follow goals and enabling our children to higher education for free, to building relationships across the globe with people from different cultures, race and diversity. Sports has taken me around the world
