Sloth Bears: The Unsung Guardians of Our Forests 🌳🐻

Sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) play an important role in maintaining healthy forest ecosystems. From controlling insect populations to dispersing seeds, these unique mammals contribute to soil health, forest regeneration, and biodiversity.

However, habitat loss and fragmentation, human - bear conflict, poaching, and road and railway collisions continue to threaten their survival.

Protecting sloth bears requires conserving natural habitats, maintaining wildlife corridors, strengthening conservation efforts, and promoting human - wildlife coexistence.

At Terracon Ecotech, we recognise the importance of biodiversity conservation in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Protecting species like the sloth bear is essential to preserving the ecological balance and natural heritage of our forests.

Celebrating the forest guardians that help maintain healthy ecosystems and protecting their future through the conservation of thriving forests and wildlife habitats.

Meet Bithi Majumder, Analyst – Ecology and Biodiversity at Terracon Ecotech.

Driven by her passion for plants and the natural world, Bithi brings curiosity and a keen eye for biodiversity to her work at Terracon Ecotech. As a Botany student, her field experiences helped her recognise that she is not separate from nature, but a small part of it. Born on 22nd May, the International Day for Biological Diversity, her journey into ecology feels especially meaningful.

For Bithi, fieldwork offers a chance to reconnect with nature, enjoy some green therapy, and photograph new species. One of her most memorable experiences was when a Tailed Jay butterfly, which she had struggled to photograph during her master’s dissertation, unexpectedly landed on her cheek a year later, turning a long-awaited photograph into a special field memory.

Beyond ecology, Bithi enjoys photography, singing, sketching, and writing. Whether exploring nearby places with her camera or dreaming of discovering a taxon new to science, she finds inspiration in the little wonders of the natural world. And if she could be any species, she would choose a butterfly, naturally, because of their shared fondness for plants!

We are delighted to have Bithi as part of the Terracon Ecotech team, contributing her curiosity and passion to our work in ecology and biodiversity.

A fearless survivor of India’s wild landscapes, the Honey Badger (Mellivora capensis). 🦡

Known for its strength, intelligence and remarkable resilience, this adaptable mammal plays an important role in forest and grassland ecosystems. As an opportunistic omnivore and skilled digger, it interacts with a wide range of species and contributes to the ecological balance of its habitat.

Protecting natural habitats means conserving not only the most iconic species, but also the lesser-known animals that keep ecosystems functioning.

Ganges River Dolphin Day | 5 October 🐬🌊

The Ganges River Dolphin is more than India’s National Aquatic Animal; it is an important indicator of the health of our freshwater ecosystems.

On Ganges River Dolphin Day, we recognise the ecological importance of this unique river mammal and the need to protect its habitat, maintain healthy river flows, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable practices around our rivers.

Protecting river dolphins means protecting the rivers they depend on and the biodiversity and communities sustained by these ecosystems. 🌍🐬

Animals are not just part of nature, they are part of the ecosystems that sustain life. 🐾🌿

On World Animal Day, we recognise the importance of protecting wildlife, conserving biodiversity, and creating a future where people and animals can coexist.

From understanding species and habitats to supporting ecological restoration and responsible development, every conservation effort begins with recognising the value of life around us.

Because protecting animals means protecting the ecosystems, habitats, and biodiversity we all depend on.

🌍 Let’s move from simply observing wildlife to understanding, respecting, and protecting it.
