Run Scandisk and Defragment at least once a month. This will keep your hard drive healthy and prevent crashes. Alternatively, purchase a disk utility program and use it to keep your hard drive healthy. These programs are part of Windows and can be found at Start/Computer then Right click on the drive you want to fix. Choose Scandisk or Defragment from the menu.

Any data you cannot afford to lose to at least two separate physical drives. So backup data to external hard drives, USB/thumb drives, CD-RW's etc.
The time to backup is when you create something you can't afford to lose. Don't wait until tomorrow.

Top Tip: Running XP? Problems with Internet Explorer? If you're using XP, you're still stuck with IE8, since IE9 is only available for Windows 7 and Vista systems. But, after installing the latest fixes from Microsoft you may find that IE8 no longer starts up. Stories are cropping up all over the Internet reporting a strange problem, whereby the latest Windows updates seem to 'break' IE8. The problem seems to be related to the iertutil.dll file, which goes missing from the system after the updates are applied. According to Microsoft, the problem is only affecting a small number of users, and their engineering team is looking into the details. But that isn't much help if you can't get your browser to work.

However, if you are experiencing this problem, there is a fix which should help:
1. Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del] to open the Task Manager.
2. Click File > New Task, type CMD and click OK.
3. At the command prompt type: copy c:\windows\system32\dllcache\iertutil.dll c:\windows\system32 and press [Enter].
4. Type EXIT followed by [Enter].
This tip will copy the missing DLL file from the DLL cache folder, and should allow you to load IE again.
