Stories around the cyclical nature of creation, destruction, and sustenance are everywhere. Can they be looked at as source material for insights during a pandemic?

By immersing in myths we are able to understand stories, characters, and plots that have been used to help people make sense of a world in chaos. These help us make sense of the present and look at it from an alternative perspective.

As a cultural insights agency, we find ourselves thinking - How might brands use the treasure trove of mythology to construct their narratives?

How might brands adapt their personality to provide solutions in these times?
How do the heroes of myths situate themselves in their crumbling environments?

In this podcast, we look at the collective experience of COVID-19 through the lens of mythology. Our guest is Patel author of mythological fiction and professor of comparative world mythology at the University of Mumbai.
His blog “This is Utkarsh speaking” carries wonderful stories and insights into the world of mythology. He is also the founding member of ‘The Mythology Project’ which aims to dig into this rich cultural stockpile, by researching living myths and traditions.

GenZ have been born into the world of social media sharing and do not consider it a distinctive tool of expression. To them, social media is a community space that means togetherness over individuality.

And why not? - given that old social structures of the 'real world' like religion, caste, qualification etc play a lesser role in demarcating their identity.

Amidst the festival season in India, we see technology emerging to ‘demystify’ traditions and rituals that were erstwhile cumbersome to follow.

The apps and content around the Ganesh Chaturthi is a case in point.
‘My Omnamo’ to hire a pandit,
'Find Ganesha’ to find nearby pandals (gatherings) on the map and ‘Lalbaughcha Raja Website’ to live stream rituals were some popular ones. Apart from this, ‘YouTube highlights trending devotional songs on its home page,
Food delivery apps like ‘FoodPanda’ and ‘Swiggy’ offer reccomendations on where to get the best sweets, discounts and offers.

All useful tools to make traditions easier to follow and accessible to the younger generation, don’t you think?

While Tier 3 city, Allahabad, races ahead with fancy new malls, brands and the like, roadside fortune telling is still big business. When we were in field, we got a reading from a bird who picked up a chit that said 'finances need to be managed better'.
