Urban areas contribute two thirds more greenhouse gas emissions per person than rural areas do in India. This may sound intuitive given how many people live and work in them, but emissions in major cities around the world, such as London, Kuala Lumpur and Mexico City, are typically lower - up to 60% - than the national average per person. In India, the reverse is true, with major cities like Delhi and Kolkata emitting a third or sometimes double the national average.
