When Your Senior Leaders Are Struggling in Performance
A few years ago, I was brought in to work with a senior leader, Ravi Prakash
On paper, Ravi had everything: a strong track record, and a team that respected him. But something had shifted. Deadlines were slipping. His team seemed disengaged. The board was starting to ask questions. HR had already tried a training program. It hadn't worked.
The usual assumption in moments like this is "he's lost his edge" or "maybe he's not the right fit anymore." So the instinct is to manage him out, or push another workshop on him.
But when I sat down with Ravi, the real story emerged. He wasn't lacking skill. He was carrying invisible weight — a mix of self-doubt after a recent restructuring, unspoken tension with a peer, and a leadership style that had simply stopped evolving with his growing responsibilities. He didn't need more information. He needed space to think, an honest mirror, and someone in his corner who wasn't judging him.
Over the following months, we worked together — not on "fixing" him, but on rebuilding his clarity, his confidence, and his way of showing up for his team. Slowly, the numbers moved. But more importantly, Ravi moved. He became more decisive, more present, and far more trusted by the people around him.
This is the part organisations often miss: when a senior leader's performance dips, it is rarely a competence problem. It is almost always a clarity, confidence, or capacity problem — and no training program can fix that from the outside.
