The RBI has increased the repo rate by 25 basis points. What could this mean for your home loan EMI?

On 7 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of India raised the policy repo rate from 5.25% to 5.50%. This could put pressure on borrowing costs for some borrowers, depending on how their loans are priced.

If you have a floating-rate home loan, a change in your lending rate could mean a higher monthly EMI or a longer repayment period.

For example, consider a ₹50 lakh home loan with a 20-year repayment tenure:

• At 7.75% interest, the estimated EMI is ₹41,047 per month.
• At 8% interest, the estimated EMI is ₹41,822 per month.
• Difference: approximately ₹775 more per month.
• Additional repayment over 12 months: approximately ₹9,300.

These figures are illustrative and assume the interest rate changes while the loan tenure remains unchanged.

However, the RBI's repo rate hike does not automatically mean every borrower's home loan rate will increase by 0.25 percentage points. The actual impact depends on the loan's benchmark, reset date, outstanding balance and lender's terms.

Before estimating the impact on your finances, check your current interest rate, loan benchmark and next reset date.

A small change in the interest rate can make a noticeable difference to your total repayment over time.

Has your bank informed you about any change in your home loan interest rate or EMI?

What could the new PF rule mean for your monthly take-home salary?

The impact of the new PF rule can vary depending on your annual salary and how your PF contribution is calculated.

For example, the salary-wise comparison shows that:

* ₹6 lakh annual salary: ₹48,200 → ₹47,000 monthly in-hand
* ₹10 lakh annual salary: ₹81,533 → ₹80,333
* ₹15 lakh annual salary: ₹1,15,075 → ₹1,13,875
* ₹25 lakh annual salary: ₹1,79,883 → ₹1,78,683
* ₹60 lakh annual salary: ₹3,68,785 → ₹3,67,585

The difference comes from the change in the PF contribution considered under the new rule.

But these figures are not the same for everyone. Your actual take-home salary can depend on your salary structure, PF calculation, tax regime, employer policy and other components of your compensation.

Before estimating your revised in-hand salary, check:
1. Your PF wage component
2. Employee PF contribution
3. Employer PF contribution
4. Basic salary and allowances
5. Your current salary structure
A small change in the PF calculation can affect your monthly take-home pay as well as your retirement contribution.

Have you checked how the new PF rule could affect your salary?

A passport issued to a child below 15 years may not remain valid for five full years under the new 2026 rules.

The Ministry of External Affairs has amended the Passports Rules, 1980, bringing changes that parents should know before applying for or renewing a child’s passport.

Here are the key changes:

📌 Passport validity for children below 15
An ordinary 36-page passport issued to a child below 15 years is valid for five years from the date of issue or until the child turns 18, whichever comes earlier.

📌 Revised passport fees from 1 July 2026
For a 36-page passport:
* Adult normal: ₹2,500
* Adult Tatkaal: ₹5,000
* Minor normal: ₹1,750
* Minor Tatkaal: ₹4,250

📌 Special category for ages 15–18
Minors aged 15 to 18 can apply under the adult category. A passport issued under this category can have validity of up to 10 years, subject to the applicable rules.

📌 Lost or damaged passport fees have also changed
For a minor applying under the minor category:
* Normal: ₹4,250
* Tatkaal: ₹6,750

📌 10% discount continues for eligible children
Minors up to 8 years can receive a 10% discount on the passport fee for fresh applications. The discount does not apply to reissue applications.

The amendment was notified on 15 September 2026 and published in the Official Gazette on 17 September 2026.

Parents should check the child’s exact age, application category, passport type, service type and current fee before making payment.

A recruitment agency came to Legal Babu with a complex licensing requirement. The goal was clear: obtain the Recruiting Agent (RA) licence and complete the required compliance formalities.

According to Kichu Suresh, Legal Babu supported their team through the process, including documentation, eligibility requirements, Bank Guarantee submission and final compliance formalities.

Three things that mattered to them:

* Clear guidance throughout the process
* Accurate and complete documentation support
* Responsiveness at each stage

They also shared that the team helped them navigate requirements that could otherwise be complex for a recruitment agency.

Thank you to Kichu Suresh and Akiz India for sharing your experience with Legal Babu.

RPSL companies, your existing forms may no longer be the right ones to use.

The Merchant Shipping (Recruitment and Placement of Seafarers) Rules, 2026, introduce new forms and formats for licensing, declarations, employment agreements and other RPSL-related procedures.

If you operate a maritime recruitment agency or plan to apply for an RPSL licence, understanding these changes can help you prepare the correct documentation.

Here are the key changes to know:

1. New RPSL application: Old Form III → New Form I

2. Declaration by RPS: Old Form V → New Form II

3. RPS management details: Old Form VI → New Form III

4. Shipowners' undertaking for repatriation: Old Form VII → New Form IV

5. RPSL licence: Old Form VIII → New Form V

6. RPSL renewal application: Old Form IV → New Form VI

7. Show-cause notice to RPS: Old Form IX → New Form VII

The new formats also introduce:

• Form VIII: Bank guarantee return request letter
• Form IX: Seafarer's Employment Agreement
• Form X: Crew casualty reporting
• Form XI: Receipt for Welfare Fund Contribution

The prescribed format for each procedure matters. Review the applicable forms before preparing or submitting your RPSL documentation.

Are you currently using the old RPSL forms, or have you started preparing your documents under the 2026 Rules?

Planning to start an RPSL company? Here's what the licence and inspection fees could cost you.

Before applying for a Recruitment and Placement Service Licence (RPSL), understand the fees prescribed under Schedule I of the Merchant Shipping (Recruitment and Placement of Seafarers) Rules, 2026.

Here are 7 important fees to know:

1. Fresh licence application: ₹3,00,000, plus the inspecting authority's fees.

2. Licence renewal: ₹1,00,000 if you apply 3 to 6 months before expiry, or ₹1,50,000 if you apply after 3 months before expiry and before the licence expires. Inspecting authority fees are additional.

3. Initial inspection: ₹40,000, plus inspecting authority fees.

4. Annual inspection: ₹40,000, plus inspecting authority fees.

5. Renewal inspection: ₹40,000, plus inspecting authority fees.

6. Change of business address: ₹1,00,000, plus inspecting authority fees.

7. Change of RPSL company name: ₹1,00,000.

These fees are separate from the bank guarantee requirements under Rule 8.

What should aspiring RPSL owners do?

Include the applicable licence fee, inspection charges and bank guarantee in your financial planning before starting the application process.

Understanding these costs early can help you plan your investment and avoid unexpected expenses.

Are you planning to apply for a new RPSL licence or renew an existing one?
