Change today
Coral reefs aren’t just beautiful - they're essential. Coral reefs protect coastlines from erosion by acting as a natural buffer against waves, storms, and floods. They are also the foundation of the most biologically dense areas of the ocean, supporting more than a quarter of all marine life. But human activity has put these reefs in jeopardy; one-third of them face extinction. The d

estruction of coral reefs wreaks havoc on entire ecosystems. Overfishing, pollution, and coastal development are suffocating reefs with layers of sediment and trash. Climate change is warming and acidifying oceans, causing coral to expel the symbiotic algae they need to survive and the reefs to lose their color (this is called bleaching) and become more susceptible to disease and death. But the impact of reef decline isn’t just felt below the surface. Historically, coral reefs have been a major source of protein-rich food for people: nearly 25% of the fish caught in developing countries come from these reef areas. To date, one-fifth of the world’s coral reefs have already been lost. Scientists warn that with the current rates of greenhouse gas emission, which are expected to double in 50 years, we risk losing all reefs permanently, perhaps even within the century. There’s an important relationship between the atmosphere and our oceans, which is out of balance due to climate change pollution. As oceans warm, they lose their ability to absorb carbon dioxide, causing them to become “acidified.” As global temperatures rise, polar ice caps melt, which in turn raises sea levels. Both of these changes are causing coral reefs—which are critical to coastal protection, home to 25% of all marine life and provide sustenance to millions of species and humans—to actually dissolve. The consequences of warmer ocean waters could be catastrophic for millions of ocean species who will be unable to adapt to higher temperatures. There will be a collapse of marine food chain, as many species will be unable find a livable habitat and not be able to survive. This will affect everything from plankton to polar bears, and ultimately humans, who are dependent on fish for survival. Rising sea levels due to global warming pollution are a major threat to the economic livelihood, safety and health of the millions of people who inhabit coastal communities worldwide. The number of environmental refugees worldwide will continue to grow as coastal areas and islands are destroyed. The loss of Arctic and Antarctic ice does not bode well for birds or marine mammals, such as the endangered polar bear, whose hunting and breeding grounds will disappear forever. There is an urgent need to address the issue of global warming and the resultant effects.

‘Change today’ is a unique initiative started by Vanillaform which seek to address global and domestic distress at the grass root level. Every quarter we would address international/domestic issues and advocate initiatives of change at the elementary level. We firmly believe that responsible individual actions can lead to change. A change that is much solicited and is the need of the hour.

Vanillaform is a fledgling organization founded for the purpose of CSR Communications and initiatives. Through this think tank session the main objective was to understand the gaps in CSR as perceived by the NGOs and corporate world. Once the gap analysis completed, it would emerge as the areas where assistance could be provided within the scope of Vanillaform.
Dr Nair who is one of the founder members of Vanillaform respects the intent of corporate to bring about the change in society. But the pattern observed is that impact assessment of these activities undertaken by negligible few. Similarly before engaging itself in a activity there is no standard research or methodology adopted by corporate. There has to be an empirical format for conducting structured CSR by the corporate and volunteers. The volunteers are also untrained in the mode of conducting societal work. These are three areas which Vanillaform would be keen to assist both the corporate world and the NGO; Data analytics, Training and Impact assessment.
This would enable
NGOs :To make specific proposals with statistical data while seeking funds and also standardise their volunteers.
Corporate: Assess their CSR activities and study the impact thereby have a report to effectively communicate to stakeholders.
Lastly it was observed that communication was an area which could be fine tuned from both ends of the spectrum. Internal communication through outreach programs by organizations for engaging more volunteers and communication on the activities of the NGO through public platforms to make people aware of the work they are doing, enlist support and increase funding. Vanillaform believes that key to any successful partnership has to have scientific methodologies, systems approach and definitely a communication strategy. We would like to present services our organization for the same.

What is Corporate Social Responsibility, and what is not?

Companies engage in corporate social responsibility (CSR) when they confer benefits on the communities located in or near where they work which are neither required by law nor an integral part of their primary, profit-oriented operations. Consider the mining company which offers to build a road between its landing strip and a neighbouring community in order to boost local tourism businesses. This is not CSR if there is a land claim or statute which requires the company to ensure benefits to the local community, because in such circumstances the company is merely doing what is required of it. In Canada we expect companies to obey the law. It doesn’t mean they always do, but a company is not demonstrating ethical behaviour of any special significance if it is merely doing what the law demands. But if there is no such legal compulsion, building the road is a form of CSR.
