*New 9.7-inch Apple iPad with pencil support goes on sale in India at Rs 28,000.*

Apple last month announced an all-new iPad refresh for 2018 with a few iterational updates to the previous edition, but with an emphasis on its use as an educational device.

The new Apple iPad now supports the Apple Pencil. Apple
Apple had also set the price of the new iPad for Indian markets on the same day, stating that the base 32 GB Wi-Fi-only model will cost Rs 28,000, while the version with both Wi-Fi and Cellular support will cost Rs 38,600.

One of the notable additions to the new iPad is support for the Apple Pencil which will be sold separately for Rs 7,600. The 2018 iPad will be available for sale in India through Flipkart and across Apple Authorised Resellers present across the country.

Apple's new iPad is very similar to the current models and comes with the same 9.7-inch display of the previous one with the usual, thick bezels. Also included in the package is a Touch ID sensor, the usual buttons and both an HD FaceTime camera and an 8 MP rear-facing camera. The tablet will be available in silver, Space Gray and a new Gold finish and also comes with LTE support and an Apple A10 Fusion chip.

Apple at the event last month also revealed a cheaper, third-party stylus made in collaboration with Logitech that is priced at $49 in the US. We have not heard anything about the stylus being made available in India, but if it does make its way here, it would offer a better value proposition than the Apple Pencil.

*Apple IPhone India Prices Raised By Up To 3.6% Post Custom Duty Hike.*

Within days of Government hiking the customs duty on mobile phones, tech major Apple has raised prices of the iPhone by up to Rs 3,210 across various models.

It has also increased the prices of Apple Watch by up to Rs 2,510, according to information available on Apple website.

The maximum retail price (MRP) of the 256GB version of iPhone X has been raised by Rs 3,210 to Rs 1,08,930.

The price of iPhone 6 (32GB) has been increased 3.6 per cent (Rs 1,120) and will now cost Rs 31,900.

The increase in MRP is applicable on all iPhone models, except the iPhone SE, which is being assembled in India by Wistron. The iPhone SE is priced at Rs 26,000 (for 32 GB) and Rs 35,000 (for 128 GB).

The Apple Watch will also be costlier by roughly 7.9 per cent, as customs duty on smartwatches and wearables too have been hiked in the Budget. The new rates are effective from today.

The ‘Apple Watch Series 3’ 38mm would now be available for Rs 32,380, while 42mm version will be priced at Rs 34,410.

This is the second round of duty hike in the last two months. In December, the government had raised the levy on imported smartphones to 15 per cent (10 per cent earlier), to boost local manufacturing.

Following the hike, US-based Apple had then raised the average prices of iPhones by 2.5 per cent.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, while presenting the Union Budget 2018-19 last week, had said the customs duty on phones has been raised from 15 per cent to 20 per cent and on some other parts and accessories to 15 per cent, to “intensify” domestic value addition and Make-in-India in the sector.

Market watchers are of the view that the resultant impact of the duty hike could be 3-4 per cent on final price of imported mobile phones.

Customs duty on smartwatches and wearables has been doubled to 20 per cent, while that on specified parts and accessories of mobile phones has gone up to 15 per cent from the current range of 7.5-10 per cent.

India is one of the largest mobile phone markets globally. In the October-December 2017 quarter, overall mobile phone shipments in India grew 37 per cent, as per Counterpoint Research data.

Smartphone shipments in the said period increased 12 per cent, while exports of feature phones grew at a blazing 55 per cent.

*macOS High Sierra roll out today: 10 features to look forward to.*

The new macOS is coming today. Here’s a look at compatible Macs, and the operating system’s features.

After rolling out iOS 11 and watchOS 4 last week, Apple will be rolling out macOS High Sierra later tonight. The new Mac OS comes with iterative updates, and a focus on under the hood upgrades. Here’s a look at a list of compatible Macs that can be updated to High Sierra, and a list of features worth looking forward to.

*macOS High Sierra compatibility.*
For updating to High Sierra, you will need to have one of the following Macs. MacBook (2009 or later), MacBook Air (2010 or later), MacBook Pro (2010 or later), Mac mini (2010 or later), Mac Pro (2010 or later) or iMac (Late 2009 or later).

*macOS High Sierra:* Top-10 features
With High Sierra, Apple is focusing more on boosting Mac’s performance, as well as overall productivity. As the Apple website claims, “New technologies at the heart of the system make your Mac more reliable, capable and responsive — and lay the foundation for future innovations. macOS High Sierra also refines the features and apps you use every day. It’s macOS at its highest level yet.”

*Here are the top features on the new macOS High Sierra.*

*Apple File System:* Among the biggest changes on High Sierra is a new file system, called Apple File System or APFS. This file system is optimized for SSDs and flash storage on the new Macs, and according to Apple, it is ‘faster, efficient and focuses on both security and encryption’.

*HEVC video codec:* Apple has introduced a new codec for high-res videos, called HEVC or H.265. This codec can basically compress videos by up to 40 percent when compared to current standards. Apple also claims that the compression is done without loss in video quality.

*Powerful photo editor:* Apple has improved its Photos app with the inclusion of new editing tools. These include the ability to tweaking a photo’s color, contrast, curves, and more. There is also a compare button for easy reference of before and after photos.

*FaceTime Live Photos:* Apple has added a new interactive element to FaceTime. So if your friend is doing something crazy, you can record it as a Live Photo. You can use the Photos app to turn these live photos into loop clips, bounce clips, or long exposure-style shots.

*Safari reading mode:* Apple’s native browser has been given quite a boost in its performance. Some of the new features include a new reading mode. In this mode, which removes all the annoying elements from a web page, and only leaves the text and multimedia to give a nice reading experience.

*Blocking auto-playing videos:* Another welcome feature on Safari is its ability to block auto-playing videos. This is really helpful, as quite a few websites have small videos embedded somewhere deep in the page that automatically start playing. While helpful, Safari does allow you to choose what websites can auto-play videos.

*Mail search and split view:* The Mail app on macOS will now consume up to 35 percent less space. Other improvements include a Top Hits panel in search. Powered by Spotlight, this analyzes your mails based on your interactions and makes them more visible in search. There’s also a new split view mode in Mail. This essentially lets you open a compose window on one side, while checking mails simultaneously.

*Enhanced iMessage:* iMessage on iOS 11 has been given a big upgrade. On macOS, the messaging app gets a much-awaited feature. On High Sierra, iMessage is more in sync with its iOS counterpart. In other words, when you delete a message on your iPhone, it disappears from the Mac app as well.

*Improved Universal Clipboard:* While copy-pasting stuff across iOS and macOS is not new, Apple has improved its universal clipboard feature. High Sierra allows users to copy stuff between two Macs running on the latest OS – as long as they are using the same Apple iCloud account.

*DJ Siri:* Siri has also massively improved on High Sierra. For one, the voice assistant can now work as your personal DJ. In essence, you can ask Siri to ‘play some music’. You can also ask it to play a song from some specific genre. Needless to say, you need an Apple Music subscription for this to work.

The dual-core processor in the device allows for quicker app launch times, smoother graphics and enables Siri to speak using the built-in speaker. The Apple Watch 3 not only shows a user the steps they have walked, and the calories they burn – like the previous series did – but it can also monitor blood glucose levels (read no more painful needles). Earlier this year, such a patent by Apple was also leaked.
