Companies tend to use bigger vessels such as Panamax, Capesize when bringing in the cargo from far off ports to get the benefit from economies of scale. Certain ports cannot handle such bigger vessels because of limited draft. In those cases, bigger vessels are brought to a suitable anchorage point/port where sufficient draft is available, discharged there, thereon the cargo is shifted to smaller vessels which can call at the ports, and finally these smaller vessels do the final discharging at the ports. In shipping, IMO has got Annex VI of MARPOL which regulates the air pollution from ships. The rules set out the limits for sulphur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, primary contributors to global warming, from the ships. The annexure, as it stands, calls for progressive reduction of (SOx) to 3.5% with effect from 1 January 2012 (from the current 4.50%), then further down to 0.50%, effective from 1st January 2020, subject to a feasibility review to be completed no later than 2018.
