After the release of FOMC minutes markets mood changed.According to the document, several participants saw further rate hikes appropriate in 2019, and almost all thought it desirable to announce a plan to stop reducing Fed’s asset holdings later this year. FOMC members agreed that it was important to be flexible in managing the process of balance sheet normalization. Market participants appear to have interpreted the minutes as “not so dovish”, taking into account the US dollar appreciation that followed the document. Indian markets indicating an negative start. · Dollar/rupee opened down Thursday on selling by exporters amid weak dollar. Exporters selling seen in the market on weak dollar amid global economic slowdown, crude oil prices are also below $61/barrel. Dollar/rupee opened at Rs 71.26/$1 Thursday compared to previous close of Rs 71.33/$1. FX markets struggle to find direction or favorites as outlook in both the US and Europe is turning cautious. In the baseline, we are more bearish on the dollar than the euro and slightly positive on the pound over the coming months. In the short run, however, the dollar index could see gains due to safe haven trade on days that risk appetites decline in the market. USD/INR seen trading in Rs 71.00-71.50/$

· The dollar index, which tracks the movement of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, traded at 96.07 during early Asian trades Thursday compared to 96.24 at previous close. Adding to that, the greenback remained weak against major peers on worries about global economic slowdown, US government shutdown amid US-China trade tension. An escalation of trade tensions and a worsening of financial conditions are key sources of risk to the outlook, said the IMF.

U.S. and Chinese officials are set to begin trade negotiations on Monday in the hope of reaching a deal during a 90-day truce between President Donald Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping. The People’s Bank of China trimmed banks’ required reserves, seeking to boost liquidity as China's economy slows . The amount of cash lenders must hold as reserves will be cut by 1 percentage point, dropping by 0.5 percentage point on January 15 and a further 0.5 percentage point on January 25, the central bank said on its website. The cut will release a net 800 billion yuan ($117 billion) of liquidity and will offset a funding squeeze.
