The Centre has decided to accord top priority to road infrastructure development in the State with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) planning to spend a whopping Rs 76,000 crore to expand the road network in the next few years.

According to the data from official sources, as many as 23 national highway (NH) projects are set to be taken up in the State. Believe it or not, the budget for construction of the national highways for a length of 1,517 km is around Rs 47,516 crore. They would be taken up in phases.

This apart, the NHAI is preparing a DPR for 10 different projects in the State at an estimated cost of Rs 28,911 crore. The total length of these road projects is 818 km. Already projects worth Rs 12,841 crore are progressing in the State. Once completed, these ongoing projects would provide a new road network for a length of 786 km.

Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and DoNER G Kishan Reddy said that the length of national highway construction in Telangana in the last eight years has exceeded those undertaken by governments between 1947 and 2014. After a break of nearly six years, six-laning of the 22-km Padi-Thiruninravur stretch of the Chennai-Tirupati Highway (CTH) is set to recommence soon. The state highways department recently released Rs 152 crore to acquire land, officials said. Besides, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) commenced civil work to turn the 17-km Thiruninravur-Tiruvallur stretch of CTH into a four-lane road at a cost of Rs 340 crore.

To facilitate the smooth passage of vehicles to Tiruttani and Tirupati, in 2007, the State government proposed to upgrade the Chennai-Tiruttani-Renigunta SH to a six-lane road. NHAI took up widening the road from Alamelurangapuram to Thiruvanindravur and completed the work on 58 km till Tiruvallur. Work on the remaining 17 km could not be completed due to land-acquisition issues.

Similarly, the State highways department, which planned to convert the 22-km section of CTH from the Padi-Korattur junction to Thiruvanindravur into a six-lane stretch, could only widen the road into a four-lane stretch. Traders from Mannurpet, Padi, Ambattur, and a few other areas resisted the project and held protests. Cases were filed against land acquisition for the project.

In the meantime, differences arose between a few government agencies in transferring land to the highways department, and the project was abandoned in 2010-11. But the number of vehicles using the road kept rising, and exceeded 1 lakh in 2013. In February 2013, the State allotted `168 crore to finish the pending work. After multiple surveys, the work, which was to begin in 2014, got delayed due to issues in locating boundaries for land parcels

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to develop an expressway connecting Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh with Solapur in Maharashtra, reports Times of India (TOI).
This 318-km long expressway will also connect to the Chennai-Solapur economic corridor under the Bharatmala project of the Central government.
The expressway will pass through the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra. The project is slated to be completed by 2025.
The expressway will significantly improve the connectivity to the industrial areas in southern India with the western parts of the country upon getting bridged with the Chennai economic corridor.
The expressway was listed in the 23 priority projects taken up by the NHAI across the country. The NHAI has now invited tenders for the preparation of the detailed project report for the initiative, ToI reported.
It will also cut down the distance between Kurnool and Solapur by 100 km. Earlier, one had to travel via Nalgonda and Hyderabad to reach Solapur from the Andhra district.

Coal mines with existing environmental clearances to increase their production by up to 40% can now hike production by up to 50% – without a fresh environmental impact assessment or public consultation.
The Union environment ministry permitted this through an office memorandum dated May 7 and used the excuse of “huge pressure” on domestic coal supply, after being requested by the Union coal ministry.
The decision suggests that India is really facing a coal crunch – contrary to the coal ministry’s insistence so far that it wasn’t a coal crisis but a payment crisis.
