Capgemini might hire over 20,000 employees from India
Capgemini, the French multinational information technology consulting corporation might hire over 20,000 people in India this year, having reskilled 45,000 of its employees until May, as it inches towards automation. Last year, the company had hired 33,000 people from the country, and re-skilled 51,000 of its employees. "There is a lot of training. We are investing a lot of money in the development of training programmes because automation and the integration of automation is leading to a lot of opportunity for our workforce," Mr. Christopher Stancombe, head, industrialisation and automation, Capgemini, said. The company presently has a workforce of about 100,000 people in India. This is against the industry trend, since most IT companies have been on a firing spree, citing automation and digitisation.

Sebi bats for at least one independent woman director on boards
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is in favour of having at least one woman as independent director (ID) on the board of listed companies, said two people in the know, including a senior Sebi official. According to the Companies Act, 2013, all listed companies need to have at least one woman as a director on their board. While most companies have fulfilled this, some have done so by inducting family members of the promoters. And, women on India Inc boards are still low in number. “The thinking within Sebi is that there should be at least a fifth of women on the boards of listed companies in the next three years. To achieve this, the regulator plans to make a recommendation to the ministry of corporate affairs of making one independent woman director mandatory,” said a person with knowledge of the development. The person said the recommendation could be made after a newly set-up committee on corporate governance gave its report. The committee has had two meetings so far and, among other things, is looking at the issue of women as directors, the person added. The 21-member panel headed by Mr. Uday Kotak, managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, is expected to give its report by October. Currently, 1,516 women hold a total of 2,036 board positions of the latter total of 14,186, shows data provided by Indian Boards Database. It tracks the boards of 1,633 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange. There are 1,223 positions held by women of 7,932 total IDs. Women are slightly less than 15 per cent of all board positions on India Inc.

Paytm shifts 800 employees to Paytm Mall, plans to hire 2000 more
Noida-based Paytm has shifted 800 of its employees from its parent company One97 Communications to its e-commerce business Paytm Mall. It also plans to hire 2000 more across various business and tech roles to scale its operations. A bunch of top leadership team has been transferred to Paytm Mall, the company said. Mr. Saurabh Vashishtha, VP, Paytm Mall will now handle marketing. Mr. Amit Bagaria, VP, Paytm will take care of customer experience at Paytm Mall. Mr. Bhushan Patil, president, Paytm will handle logistics. Mr. Sunil Goyal, VP product engineering, will be heading Product and Technology at Paytm Mall. “I am excited to work with our long-standing colleagues to build the most trusted online shopping platform,” said Mr. Amit Sinha, Chief Operating Officer, Paytm Mall. Paytm Mall is also scaling its partner network by adding another 3,000 Paytm Agents to its existing workforce as it goes deeper into tier II and tier III cities, digitising catalogues of neighbourhood shopkeepers and brands. In May 2017, Paytm commissioned a separate entity by the name of Paytm Ecommerce Pvt Ltd to address the potential in online commerce. The company’s online shopping platform, Paytm Mall, raised about USD 200 Mn from SAIF Partners and Alibaba Group Holdings.

One lakh jobs may be created to support GST implementation: Infosys co-founder
Infosys co-founder and investor Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan said the country may see 10,000 to 1 lakh jobs being created in the next six months to support goods and services tax (GST) implementation. “Every year we need to create about 20 million new jobs, though I do not have seen any data or report. So, in my estimate, probably in next six months, we will see, may be 10,000 to 1 lakh jobs being created to support GST implementation,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event in Bengaluru. “But, beyond six months, it is very difficult to say at this point of time, how much more it would increase,” Mr. Gopalakrishnan, who is the chairman of CII’s India Innovation Summit said. The two-day 13th India Innovation Summit with the theme, ‘The New Wealth of Nations – Innovation and Intellectual capital’ will begin in Bengaluru on 13 July. The summit will cover subjects such as, teens as innovators to disrupt the existing businesses, rise of machines and future of human labour, India’s digital transformation into a cashless economy and the great expectations on the e-commerce industry – scaling the consumption economy, among others.
