Successful release of Humans of Bombay website by soms :)
“While I was at college, I stumbled upon a page called ‘Humans of New York’ and felt something powerful. I began to look if something like this existed in my city- in Bombay and found nothing. I graduated from college, came back home and stood at the crossroad of what to do next — I had a degree in Industrial Economics, but my heart was someplace else and I wanted to explore a little more. I took some time off, read widely and even tried to get a thing or two going but the question of why nothing like HONY had been implemented in Bombay, kept gnawing away at the back of my mind.
On one particularly lazy Sunday I decided to go for it…no plan, no strategy. At the time, I had no idea how to operate a professional camera, or how to approach people on the street to get them to talk to me…but I just knew that I wanted to desperately give it a shot. 9 out of the 10 people I approached said, ‘no’ to even talk to me, and most just looked at me like I was a crazy stalker. But the feeling I got when the 10th one said ‘yes’ was irreplaceable. I couldn’t believe that someone who I didn’t know was ready to share their life with me…I held onto the feeling and pursued it harder. With a mere 10 stories of people I’d spoken to on the streets, I started a simple page called ‘Humans of Bombay’, with the hope that people would love knowing a stranger as much as I did.
There were a lot of questions - ‘where is this going?’, ‘what’s the end goal?’ or ‘how is it viable?’ and my only answer at that point was it made me feel something I wanted to hold onto.
2 years and hundreds of portraits later…the process has been more than worth it, and it’s finally time to take the next big step.
I’m thrilled to announce that the Humans of Bombay book is finally ready for you! This book is a selection of stories from the blog, multiple unread stories and snippets from the city scenes that make Bombay what it is.
