A cytotoxicity assay is a laboratory test used to determine toxicity in a drug, pharmaceutical product, cosmetic, or medical device, by measuring its effect on cell viability. These assays are central to drug development, cancer research, and toxicology, wherever a compound needs to be screened for whether it damages living cells.

MTT Assay
LDH Assay (Lactate Dehydrogenase Release)
Trypan Blue Exclusion Assay
Resazurin (Alamar Blue) Assay
Annexin V/Propidium Iodide (PI) Staining
Caspase Activity Assays

Choosing an Assay Format
Flow cytometry-based assays (e.g., Annexin V/PI staining) — for detailed, single-cell resolution of viability states
LDH release assays — for a fast, plate-based readout of membrane damage
Fluorescent assays (e.g., Alamar Blue) — for high-throughput metabolic activity screening
Microscopic assessment — for direct visual confirmation alongside quantitative data

Why This Testing Matters
These services provide essential support for research, drug development, and toxicity screening across biomedical applications. Outsourcing cytotoxicity testing gives organizations access to specialized technical expertise, state-of-the-art facilities, and standardized protocols that are difficult to replicate in-house at the same scale or consistency.

Western Blot in Biological Research & Diagnostics

Nearly 50 years after Towbin's original protocol, Western blot remains one of the most trusted techniques in molecular biology — and for good reason. It doesn't just tell you a protein is present. It tells you its size, its relative abundance, and — with the right controls — whether it's been modified, cleaved, or degraded.
Where It Matters Most
Research
• Confirming gene knockdown/knockout at the protein level (mRNA change ≠ protein change)
• Tracking signaling pathway activation via phospho-specific antibodies
• Validating recombinant protein expression before scale-up
Diagnostics
• HIV confirmatory testing
• Diagnosing prion diseases and select autoimmune conditions
• Confirming biomarker expression in tissue-based studies
But Western blot is also one of the easiest techniques to get subtly wrong — and the failures are often invisible unless you know what to look for.
What Separates a Publishable Blot From a Questionable One
Loading control: actually flat across every lane — not just "close enough."
Molecular weight sanity check: does your band sit at the expected size, accounting for known isoforms or PTMs?
Fresh transfer buffer: and a Ponceau stain check before you even touch primary antibody.
Antibody validation: tested on a true positive AND a true negative — not just a positive control.
Documented exposure settings: consistent across samples, because a "cleaner-looking" blot isn't always a more honest one.
The most common failure mode we see isn't a broken protocol — it's an unvalidated antibody. A specific-looking single band can still be the wrong protein. If you haven't tested your antibody against a knockout, knockdown, or peptide-competition control, you don't yet know what you're detecting.
Western blot isn't outdated. It's a technique that rewards rigor — and punishes shortcuts quietly, one ambiguous band at a time.
What's the trickiest Western blot troubleshooting problem you've run into? Curious to hear from other lab folks in the comments. 👇
