Studio ESP

Studio ESP Architectural and Interior Design Studio run by Sumeet "Eddie" Arora and Manisha Paul Arora It is by no means exhaustive, but a small celebration.

Friends,

This Face book page is an informal portrayal of our professional work. We started our little studio over 15 years ago when the usual trend was to name professional practices after individual names/ surnames. Thankfully, we resisted and called it Studio ESP (Earth Space People). For the first few years our criteria for project selection were- Nice clients. We designed bathrooms, studies,

and few houses for relatives. We were soon doing some offices- designing 700 sqft of interior space to designing 8 storied buildings. Some time later, we were offered a project in the rural area of Haryana. It was a small charitable Eye Hospital supported by a German Funding Agency- CBM (Christoffel Blinden Mission), which had offices all over the world, and whose primary aim was to care for the disabled. By the time we finished this project, we had been appointed the Consulting Architects for their Asia Office that attended to similar projects in all of the Northern half of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. A wonderful 6 years were spent on a steep learning curve with them. We learnt diverse building technology from Uttaranchal, Punjab, Haryana, Jharkhand, M.P., Gujarat (primarily in Bhuj after the 2001 Earthquake), all over the N.E. Region (North Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram), and in Rural Bangladesh. We studied about the needs of differently abled people and their carer givers- those amazing people who smilingly dedicate their lives to helping others without need for accolades. You won’t ever see their pictures in the magazines, but they are out there changing lives everyday. In 2008, we formed a professional bond with our dear friend, the extremely talented Sumeet Nath at “Studio Us Design”, an established name in the field of Hospitality Design. It was time to move from Hospitals to Hospitality. A fantastic association has seen us design boutique hotels across the country, a cottage community in the hills, a large Spa Resort in a forest, a Serviced Apartment Building, Guest Houses, Farmhouses, Spa in a boutique hotel…

There are some pictures here and we will keep adding bits of information as we go along. We hope you will enjoy most of this, and we look forward to your input, comments, and recommendations. Peace...

Food for thought

I think I am subconsciously often strongly influenced by nature, and much of nature's `structural work' is not straight or square. A tall reed of grass in a windy, wild terrain is a long cylinder or a hollow tube; tree trunks and stems of plants that carry fruit and leaves are usually cylindrical and not square. Curves are there to take stresses and strains and to stand up to all sorts of external forces. On top if it all, they look good and beautiful and are infinitely more elegant than straight lines of steel and concrete - Laurie Baker

The ceiling at Barajas Madrid International airport (T4), designed by Richard Rogers, consists of 200,000 m2 of gently curved laminated bamboo laths, and is therefore the largest industrial bamboo project in the world. To comply with the stringent fir

The earthquake in Nepal was a reminder: Billions of people live in houses that can't withstand shaking. Yet safer ones can be built cheaply.

Bridges are man made structures that enable us to cross barriers. Whether it’s a river, canal, canyon, highway or part of the city, a bridge provides us not only with a connection to the other side, but it provides us with unique views. Bridges are usually situated in places we couldn’t reach before…
