Thank you to Business Goa for recognising and sharing my journey with Business Owners.

Over the years, my work with business owners has gone beyond managing finances. I have increasingly found that many entrepreneurs don't need another business theory. They need help with the challenges they are dealing with every day — cash flow, hiring, delegation, business systems, growth, leadership and building a business that does not depend entirely on the owner.

A business can be doing well and still have significant room to improve.

The real question is often not “How do I work harder?” but:

“How do I build a business that can grow beyond my own time and involvement?”

That is an area I have been deeply interested in — helping business owners move from managing day-to-day operations to thinking more strategically about business growth, profitability and long-term sustainability.

For me, this feature is not just about being published. It is an opportunity to start more conversations with entrepreneurs who are ready to look at their business differently.

Is SWP safe for retirement income?

It can be. But SWP and annuity are not the same thing.

An SWP from a mutual fund can provide regular income while keeping your money invested. It also gives you flexibility—you can change the withdrawal amount, pause it, or leave the remaining corpus invested.

But there is a risk:

Your income is linked to the performance of the underlying investments.

If markets fall sharply, especially in the early years of retirement, regular withdrawals can put pressure on the corpus.

An annuity works differently.

You give a lump sum to an insurer and, depending on the annuity option, receive a predetermined stream of income for life or for a specified period.

The trade-off is that an annuity generally offers less flexibility and limited liquidity, but it can provide greater certainty of income.

So should a retiree choose SWP or annuity?

It doesn't always have to be one or the other.

A practical retirement plan can use both:

Annuity → for essential, non-negotiable monthly expenses

SWP → for flexible expenses, lifestyle needs and additional income

For example, your basic household expenses could be covered through a predictable income source, while travel, hobbies and discretionary spending can come from an investment portfolio through SWP.

The right question isn't:

“Is SWP safe?”

It is:

“How much of my retirement income needs certainty, and how much can remain market-linked?”

That is where retirement planning becomes personal.

When people talk about wealth creation, the conversation often starts with one question:

“How much money can I invest?”

I think a better question is:

“How long can I stay invested?”

You don't need to begin with a very large amount. What matters is starting with an investment amount that is comfortable for you and then staying consistent.

That is one reason SIPs can be useful for long-term investors.

A SIP can help you invest regularly instead of constantly waiting for the market to fall, the “right time” to arrive, or your income to become much higher.

And time matters.

The money you invest today gets more time to potentially grow, and the returns generated over the years can themselves become part of the base that grows further. That is the power of compounding.

But let's also be realistic.

A SIP does not guarantee returns. Mutual fund investments are market-linked, and compounding does not work in a straight line.

The real discipline is to choose investments that suit your goals and risk profile, continue through market ups and downs, increase your SIP when your income increases, and review your plan when your circumstances change.

Starting with ₹2,000 or ₹5,000 is not the point.

Starting with a clear goal, investing consistently and giving your money enough time — that is the point.

Because wealth creation is rarely about one big investment.

It is usually about many sensible decisions repeated for many years.

If you are waiting until you have “enough money” to start investing, you may be giving up the one thing you cannot get back: time.

Planning for your child’s foreign education is not just about deciding how much to save.

It is also about deciding when that money will be needed and how it should be positioned as that date gets closer.

When the goal is still 10 years away, there is time to build the corpus.

As the admission date approaches, the focus gradually changes — from building the corpus to protecting the money you will soon need, reviewing the target, and planning for currency and liquidity.

A good education plan should therefore change as the goal gets closer.

Because the right investment strategy for a goal 10 years away may not be the right strategy when the same goal is just 12 months away.

The goal may remain the same. The financial plan should evolve with the timeline.

The problem with “Save More, Spend Less” is that it is only half the advice.

Saving more is important. Spending less is sensible. But neither, by itself, creates a strong financial plan.

The real question is: What are you doing with the money you save?

A good financial plan should look at the bigger picture — emergency funds, adequate life and health insurance, investments, tax planning, children’s goals, and most importantly, retirement planning.

For example, saving ₹20,000 a month is a good habit. But if that money simply sits idle for years, inflation can quietly reduce its purchasing power.

Similarly, cutting every expense may increase savings today, but the goal of financial planning is not to stop enjoying life. It is to balance today’s needs with tomorrow’s financial goals.

So instead of simply asking:

“How can I save more?”

Ask:

“How should I save, invest and protect my money so that it works for my future?”

That is where proper financial planning makes a difference.

We spend years building our savings, investments and insurance — but many families forget one small detail that can make a big difference later: keeping nominations updated.

Think about it.

If something happens to you, your family should not have to search through documents, guess where your investments are held, or struggle to understand who should be contacted.

A proper nomination helps make the process of claiming or transmitting financial assets smoother. But remember, nomination is not a substitute for a Will or proper estate planning. The rights of legal heirs can still matter depending on the asset and applicable succession law.

A simple financial housekeeping exercise can go a long way:

✅ Check the nominee in your bank accounts
✅ Review your mutual fund and demat nominations
✅ Check your insurance policies and other financial assets
✅ Update nominations after marriage, divorce, birth of a child or other major family changes
✅ Keep your family informed about where important documents and investments are held

Good financial planning is not only about creating wealth.

It is also about making sure your family can access and manage that wealth when they need it most.

Take 15 minutes this week. Check your nominations. Your family will thank you for it.

A family doesn’t depend only on your income today. It depends on that income for many years to come.

Think about the EMI, children’s education, household expenses, future goals, and the lifestyle your family has built around your earnings. If your income suddenly stops, these responsibilities don’t stop with it.

That is where life insurance becomes more than just a policy.

The real purpose of life insurance is to create a financial safety net for your family when you are no longer there to provide one. A well-planned life cover can help your family manage important financial commitments and continue working towards their goals during a difficult time.
