The Kalighat painting style was created around the mid-nineteenth century in the neighborhood of Kali temple in Calcutta. These drawings on paper were finished by a gathering known as “ patuas” , this the name Kalighat Pata.
Characterised by bright colours and bold outlines , Kalighat Paintings evolved as a unique genre of Indian Painting .
Kalighat painters prevailantly used gritty Indian tones like indigo , ochre, red , dim, blue and white.
Before the artists made a shift to cheaper factory-made colours, they used natural colours like:
Black – burnt carbon
Blue- indigo flower
Green- sem and it’s leaves
Red- peepal trees bark
Yellow – turmeric
While- rice powder
Today KaliGhat and Indian Miniature Art is on verge on extinction with only few artist keeping it alive.
