Quality TIP # 9 ::

Orthogonal Defect Classification (ODC) is the most prevailing technique for identifying defects wherein defects are grouped into types rather than considered independently. ODC classifies defect at two different points in time:
- Time when the defect was first detected – Opener Section
- Time when the defect got fixed – Closer Section

ODC methodology classifies each defect into orthogonal (mutually exclusive) attributes some technical and some managerial. These attributes provide all the information to be able to shift
through the enormous volume of data and arrive at patterns on which root-cause analysis can be done.

For small and medium projects, in order to save time and effort, the defects can be classified up to first level of ODC while critical projects typically large projects needs the defects to be classified deeply in order to get analyze and understand defects. First level of ODC includes classifying the defects under various defect types like Requirements, Design, Logical (Logical defects are found by testing the code using functional/unit testing), and Documentation.

Quality TIP # 8 ::

Positive Variance = Actual is greater than planned.
This shows that (a) the requirements were not understood completely (b) resources competence/productivity was not considered fully (c)Proper measures were not taken to contain the defects leading to higher rework effort (d) change in requirements but no re-estimation was done (e) resources productivity was considered but not the variation in productivity

Negative Variance = Actual is lesser than planned
This shows that all the points mentioned above are applicable except point (c)

Both positive and negative variance (above/below the acceptable limit) are bad for the organization. Positive variance means higher effort leading to higher cost and client dissatisfaction, whereas, negative variance means that client has been given more effort than required, this may lead to loosing the client and also loosing on the productive efforts which if known earlier would have been applied on some other task.

Quality TIP # 7 ::
During reoccurring meetings apart from Minutes of Meeting (MOM) always keep note of “Next Steps”. Next steps should be tracked in a separate sheet / document and should always be walked through in each meetings to keep track of activities pending, closed and on hold. If Next steps are tracked in an effective way then the outcome of meetings will be more productive.

A typical next step sheet should have the following:
:: Action Item, Date Identified, Person Responsible, Dependency, Due closure date, Actual closure date::

Next steps tracking is generally useful when conducting status update meetings. Small effort but goes a long way in better ex*****on and timely completion of activities.

Quality TIP # 6 ::
While sending a meeting request always keep three things as part of the request.
AGENDA: What all you are going to discuss in the meeting, mention these as clear points,
OBJECTIVE: What is the objective of discussing the points, and DELIVERABLE: What will be the outcome of the meeting (not the exact results but the result category, e.g clear R&R of the team is a deliverable).
Also always make sure that the timing and venue are clearly mentioned.

Quality TIP # 5 ::
Training form an integral part for growth and improvement of an organization’s biggest asset, it’s people. Training should be identified and given based on the roles and responsibilities that an individual is playing and what growth path is defined for the individual. Metrics analysis, Team leader inputs and requirements as seen by individuals can be used to identify the training need of individuals. Organizations should always have defined methodology to measure training impact and effectiveness, in absence of these most of the training end up as effort lost and dissatisfied trainees.

Quality TIP # 4 ::
Balanced Scorecard is a tool that organizations can use for defining their Quality Roadmap. The four blocks of Balanced scorecard Financial, Customer, Internal Business Process and Learning & Growth among themselves cover all the facets required for a well defined Quality Roadmap. Applying Quality Tip #2 i.e. GQM approach along with Balanced Scorecard will give a metrics driven and a quantifiable Roadmap to the organization.

QUALITY TIP # 3 ::
All organization should have a defined process improvement (PI) process and should apply the lean methodology to it. Even though PI process on the face of it looks quite simple is quite complex and if not defined and implemented properly it will eat up a lot of effort. Also if PI is not implemented on time it looses it's significance.

QUALITY TIP # 2 ::
One of the best methodology to start the METRICS initiative in an organization is GQM, G=Goal, Q=Question, M=Metrics. Define the goals which you want to achieve, then question the processes, sub-processes that will have to be put in place to achieve the goal and then define the measurements and metrics that will be used to check the health of the processes & sub-processes so that the goals are achieved.

QUALITY TIP # 1::
Peer review and unit testing though look to increase the effort from development side but in the long run they enhance product quality, reduce internal defects, reduce rework effort and thus reduces the overall project effort and increases the chances of meeting commited deadlines.
