Makar Sankranti is a Hindu festival that marks the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn, known as Makara in Sanskrit. The festival is celebrated on the 14th of January every year, and marks the beginning of the month of Magha in the Hindu calendar.
According to Hindu scriptures, Makar Sankranti has a deep spiritual significance. It is believed that on this day, the sun enters the northern hemisphere and begins its journey towards the equinox, signaling the end of the winter solstice and the start of longer days. This is seen as a time of renewal and new beginnings, and is considered an auspicious time for spiritual practices and rituals.
In the Vedic tradition, Makar Sankranti is associated with the god Surya and is considered a time to honor and worship him. According to astrology Jaggery (गूळ) has suns energy and sesame seeds (तीळ) has Saturns energy, by eating such foods we are getting energy of these lords. Many people perform puja (worship) and offer prayers to the sun on this day, seeking blessings for health, wealth, and happiness. It is also a time for charitable acts and for giving to the poor.
Many people also observe ritual fasts on Makar Sankranti, and eat special foods like til-gud (a sweet made from sesame seeds and jaggery) and khichdi (a dish made from rice and lentils) .
In addition to the spiritual significance, Makar Sankranti is also an important festival for farmers as it marks the end of the harvest season, and the start of a new agricultural cycle. People celebrate by flying kites, exchanging sweets, and taking holy dips in rivers like Ganges, Godavari, and Kshipra.
Wishing you all the happy Makar Sankranti
