When you produce to pharmaceutical or nutraceutical grade, your equipment sits within the scope of your GMP compliance. At an audit, it is examined like anything else on the floor, and whatever it cannot demonstrate becomes something you have to account for.

EU GMP is the standard your site is inspected against, under EudraLex Volume 4. For the equipment within that site, GMP is not a label it carries. It is a set of specific requirements it must satisfy. The system has to be qualified under Annex 15, through design, installation, operation and performance qualification, and it has to arrive with the documentation that proves it. Materials and surface finish that withstand cleaning validation. A design that supports contamination control rather than undermining it.

That is what determines whether the equipment supports you at audit. A system that arrives qualified and documented, with a cleaning regime you can validate. So the right thing to ask a supplier for is not reassurance. It is the paperwork: the qualification package and the cleaning validation evidence that allow your GMP position to hold with their equipment inside it. Built to that standard, the equipment becomes one of the assured parts of your compliance.

In a plant that runs on high pressure and flammable solvent, certifications are never an afterthought. They weigh on every audit, every inspection, and every shift that has to end the way it started.

What is easy to overlook is that a certificate is only ever as sound as the equipment behind it. When the systems on the floor are built to standard, compliance stops being something to defend and becomes something that simply holds.

EU GMP, CE, ASME and ATEX each close a specific operational risk, from audit exposure to pressure integrity to ignition in classified areas. Built in from the start, they stop being something you manage and become something you can rely on.

Ginger's reputation rests largely on one molecule: 6-gingerol. It carries much of the pungency and most of the pharmacological interest, from anti-inflammatory to antiemetic activity. It is also remarkably easy to lose.

Above roughly 60 degrees, 6-gingerol dehydrates irreversibly into 6-shogaol. A little of this shift changes the profile; a lot of it rewrites the extract. Steam distillation, run at 100 degrees and above, drives that conversion close to completion, which is why it yields a fragrant ginger oil that is largely empty of intact gingerols. Aroma survives. The bioactive fraction does not.

This is where the extraction method stops being a preference and becomes the deciding variable. Supercritical CO2 works at around 31 to 40 degrees, below the threshold where gingerol degrades, and can be tuned across pressure to separate the volatile terpene fraction from the heavier gingerol-rich oleoresin, or capture both in a single fractionated run. The result is an extract whose composition reflects the rhizome, not the heat applied to it.

Getting the fragile compounds out intact is the hard part. It is also the part we build for.

Ask a supplier whether their equipment is ATEX certified and the answer is almost always yes. The question that actually protects a plant comes next: certified to which category, matched to which zone, and held to what surface temperature?

ATEX does not certify general quality. It certifies that a piece of equipment will not become the ignition source in a defined explosive atmosphere. The mark is specific about it. It states the equipment's category and protection method, the gas or dust group it is built for, and a temperature class that caps its maximum surface temperature below the ignition point of what is in the air. That category then has to be matched to the zone classification of wherever it is installed. For the higher-risk categories, that assessment is made by an independent notified body rather than self-declared.

On a CO2 system, the relevance is precise. CO2 itself is inert and non-flammable. The explosive atmosphere, where one exists, comes from the ethanol and co-solvents some processes use, and from the combustible dust generated in pre-processing and milling. Those are the areas ATEX governs, across both electrical and mechanical ignition sources, and they are where a safety case is genuinely won or lost.

For whoever carries the safety and insurance sign-off, that detail is the point. ATEX is not a reassurance to take on trust. It is a documented position you can evidence, zone by zone. To learn how ATEX is specified on our systems, write to us at [email protected]

Under regulatory pressure and a sharp consumer shift toward cleaner labels, the biggest names in US food and beverages have committed to pulling synthetic dyes from their portfolios by 2027. The intent is settled. The supply to deliver on it is not.

The companies that come through this well will not necessarily be the ones with the sharpest procurement teams. They will be the ones who stopped treating colour as something you only ever buy.

Behind the pledges sits a simple mismatch: dozens of major portfolios reformulating into a natural colour supply that grows at the pace of agriculture, not of demand. For the pigments that lend themselves to it, that pressure makes a strong case for owning the extraction step rather than competing for its output.
