A narrative from a Client:
"We are doing good in our business as far as sales targets and deliveries are concerned. But our team is not motivated enough. The sense of ownership and drive from within is lacking. We would like to arrange for a motivational talk for them!"

Such Motivational talks have their own impacts for sure but for the transformations to take place, one such event may not change the lives of people overnight. There needs to be a series of consistent efforts for a specific period & post this period, the hand-holding is necessary.

As far as being motivated at workplace is concerned, here are some factors to be considered,

SOPs, though formulated focusing on the Operational aspect, they do and should emerge from the philosophy of the organization. Organizationโ€™s values, principles and how they depict in the decisions & ex*****on ultimately build the culture.
While pursuing the vision, the Organizations must get rid of the myopic approach & while strategizing for long term gain, the present & future operations play a major role. SOPs are the guidelines ensuring all of this falls in place for current as well as future scenarios.

The standardization is the core of the Processes, where discipline plays an utmost important role, which is linked closely with the organizational culture.

As a Soft Skills Trainer, I always sense this need while conducting training programs. While Organizations are investing huge budgets in upskilling, the workforce must also be well-tuned with SOPs. SOPs is just a frame... not a limitation & they fuel the growth of the organization by offering a runway.

Timelines are often connected with work pressures... And let me admit, even I used to come from the same mindset. But as I started working on my self-organization patterns, the first question I asked myself was -'why?' and that is where certain realizations came from.

๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐จ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ ๐š๐œ๐ญ ๐š๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ?
~ most of the times rewards are connected with these timelines. They act as motivators otherwise but we also fear losing them with missed timelines. This fear creates pressure.

~ some times we are answerable to someone, mostly a client. Our reputation, social image, credibility are all at stake when there are timelines in picture. Compromises here may reflect in long term loss & re-gaining them calls for restart then. All this creates a toll on our emotional & mental conditions, reflecting in pressure

~ Certain tasks or actions lose relevance after a point in time & if we don't respect that point, the whole set of efforts stands as a waste. This awareness creates pressure

But, all these can be perceived as positive pressures, which can be used to our benefit.

Let me also share ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ ๐œ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐ฐ๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ก ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ง๐ž๐ ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ...
~ It could be a failure at the planning level itself. Assigning lesser time for humongous tasks could be one mistake

~ Many fail in estimation of time allotment. Inexperience, lack of awareness, tendency to be over-confident, not taking cognizance of factors which are out of our control, inability in getting things done from the team members, lack of assertiveness can all contribute to this failed estimation.

~ Inability to say 'no' to the time wasters, to those attractive distractions, inability to focus & concentrate reflect in letting time slip second by second, ultimately impacting the final timeline

~ Many lack a skill of backward planning. If this is not done, the tasks remain activities... do not become goals, which is necessary for any accomplishment

I have seen many organizations making their Managers, Team members wait post office hours to complete their tasks. Let's discuss its impact on your employees & work culture.

~ Employees lack ownership towards work. It becomes a compulsive activity for them.
~ If you are expecting your employees to reach office in time but not respecting their time while closing, the respect towards Organization gradually sees a drop.
~ Focus shifts from work to timings and escape loopholes.
~ The only point of loyalty becomes the paychecks.
~ You gradually get to see a rising graph of staff turnover.
~ Those who choose to stay back mostly come from a stagnated mindset, lack courage or mindset to face a challenging situation. So, overall quality of human resource gets compromised.
~ The new talent hunt becomes a tough game.

Though we agree that people primarily work for monetary benefits, with increasing awareness about mental health, family values & also with advancements in technology creating their own impact, finding & retaining a talented workforce is becoming a challenge. And work culture plays a major role here.

Here are some points for Organizations to reflect upon...
~ Are discipline & rules paramount at the workplace?
~ Do you make employees at all the levels aware of mutual respect culture?
~ Do your values, philosophy reflect in your HR policies?
~ Are your Managers trained on time management & efficiency enhancement skills?
~ Do you make periodic efforts to check the employee ownership quotient?
~ Do you have an in-built mechanism for the same?
~ Do your employees get chance to conduct organizational assessment audit? And do you possess the mindset to accept the results with honesty & openness?

I am not saying that all the employees possess the required skills & mindset to do this but there are certainly some triggering factors which start growing like cancerous tissues if not addressed timely.

It is very important to keep checking the mental health of the Organization. I am sure you as a leader will get multiple insights regarding the performance graphs.
