WiSH Energy Powers Sustainable Change at Mayura Hotels, Karnataka

Mayura Hotels in Karnataka faced significant challenges with high electricity costs and diesel consumption due to load shedding and power cuts lasting 12-18 hours daily. Essential operations, such as water pumps, lifts, and display board lighting, consumed approximately 40-100 units of electricity per day, relying heavily on diesel generators to keep running. This resulted in soaring electricity bills and additional motor repair expenses.

Our Solution

WiSH Energy successfully installed customized 10-20 kW Wind-Solar hybrid systems at each hotel site, providing a reliable and uninterrupted power supply. These systems effectively resolved the voltage fluctuation issues that had previously disrupted the hotel's operations. By harnessing the power of both wind and solar energy, the solution significantly reduced the reliance on diesel generators, thereby cutting both diesel consumption and electricity costs by as much as 1 lakh rupees annually. Additionally, the adoption of this renewable energy solution led to a notable decrease in maintenance costs, particularly for motors and other equipment. The system is designed to deliver long-term savings and efficiency, with a payback period of just 5 years, ensuring both economic and environmental benefits for Mayura Hotels in the years to come.

KERC's New Guidelines for Rooftop Aero Turbine Projects: A Step Forward for Renewable Energy in Karnataka

The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has recently issued comprehensive guidelines for rooftop aero turbine (RAT) projects, bringing a new dimension to the state’s renewable energy landscape. These guidelines cover RAT installations with or without solar integration, marking an important step toward decentralized power generation and enhancing flexibility for consumers.

With this move, Karnataka becomes the third state in India to formally include aero turbines in its renewable energy policy, following states like Gujarat and Maharashtra. This initiative is part of the broader Karnataka Renewable Energy Policy 2022-2027, which aims to create a diversified energy portfolio for the state.
The new guidelines provide a clear framework for both gross and net metering systems, giving consumers options depending on their energy needs. Under gross metering, all energy produced by the RAT system is exported to the grid, while net metering tracks the difference between the energy consumed and what’s fed into the grid, making it a popular choice for consumers looking to reduce their electricity bills.

KERC has also detailed the operational requirements, including technical specifications, metering protocols, and connectivity standards. Tariff structures have been established, ensuring that the installations remain financially viable for both commercial and residential users. Power purchase agreements (PPAs) are a crucial part of the new framework, allowing energy producers to lock in rates and ensure their contributions to the grid are well-compensated.

One of the key advantages of these guidelines is the encouragement for hybrid installations, combining RATs with rooftop solar. This combination could significantly boost energy production, especially in areas with high wind potential, complementing solar power during non-sunny periods.

Karnataka’s push for RAT projects aligns with its ambitious goal to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix, helping reduce its carbon footprint and fostering sustainable energy usage. By simplifying the regulatory process and providing incentives, the state hopes to attract more consumers to adopt this innovative technology.
