MCX Copper price fell sharply after failing to breach stiff resistance area of Rs.341.50 - 343.50 levels. The price is currently pretty close to its recent lows near Rs.329-328 levels (cmp Rs.330.60).

MCX Copper price fell sharply after failing to breach stiff resistance area of Rs.341.50 - 343.50 levels. The price is currently pretty close to its recent lows near Rs.329-328 levels (cmp Rs.330.60). However, there is still no positive sign. The intraday bias looks negative below immediate resistance near R.333-334.50 area and test of recent low near Rs.327.50 looks possible. Higher resistance is at Rs.337.80.

Downwards lurches in the Shanghai stock market often hit copper, and Tuesday is no different.

The price of a three month copper contract on the London Metal Exchange has dropped 1.6 per cent to $5032 per tonne, according to Reuters data, Naomi Rovnick writes.

This came after the Shanghai Composite Index, mainland China's main equity benchmark, closed more than six per cent lower as investors expectations for more government stimulus of China's flagging economy were suddenly reduced.

That same bout of pessimism over stimulus has hit copper, as China is a major consumer of the industrial metal. It is only in recent months, however, that trading in Shanghai shares has directly influenced copper. As the FT's commodities correspondent Henry Sanderson wrote here, Chinese investment funds were commonly buying equities and short-selling copper earlier this year.
