Supreme Court on 30th July reversed its 1997 ruling in Sun Export case. In that case it was held that if language in exemption notification is not clear, it should be interpreted in favour of taxpayer.

Now, a five judge bench has said that ambiguity will be interpreted so as to favour revenue.

Composition Scheme: A major problem in Composition Scheme for traders was that they had to pay tax @1% on TOTAL turnover. Thus, a trader selling exempted as well as taxable goods had to pay tax on exempted goods also.

This problem has now been remedied. From 1st January, traders need to pay Composition levy only on taxable goods.
