Day 2. Ratnagiri : After a full day sight seeing in Ratnagiri (Ratnadurga fort, Bhagwati temple, Theva palace), perfect time for a good lunch. Instructions to our taxi drivers were very clear - “take us to a homely place serving the best of local food” They recommended Hotel Swagat which matched our expectations fully.
We were warmly greeted by the enthusiastic restaurant owner Mr Pawar who claimed they serve only the fresh catches, make their own masalas and the cooks are their own family members. We ordered Surmai, Pomfret, Oysters, Prawns, dry fish - all of them superbly prepared. Apart from the normal Konkam curry (sol kadhi) Swagat served us one more blissful currey - Ratambhyachi kadhi (yellow colour tangy currey in the pic). Dessert was a bowl full of Aamras - pulpified during the season and stored. Full marks to this place for everything especially the warmth and personal touch from the hosts - the Pawar family.

Ganpatipule (In Ratnagiri) - a remote and sleepy town in the Konkan region of western India. Better Known for the centuries old Svayambhu Ganpati temple, but as located on the sea banks as well as surrounded by a fertile land suitable for coconuts, cashews, mangoes etc also is a Mecca for foodies. (Both veg and non veg)
Day 1: Ganpatipule temple : Hotel Sameer
9 out of 10 people reccomended this place for good sea food. Do not go by it’s simple look. This place promises best of fish curries and fries (prawns, pomfrest, bangda, etc) at a pretty reasonable price..
2 straightforward instructions by the owner 🙂 (In full Konkani tone and style)
1) Sea food Meals will take at least 45 mins as it is made after order
2) They do not provide takeaways 🙂

Not posting about this place would have been a cardinal sin of sorts. This one is a toddy place.. serving almost all sorts of meat.. one would wish for in a menu. Of course we started off with the toddy..helped us settle down for the non veg onslaught tht ws abt to come. First up was karimeen(pearl spot fish) pollichattu. Fish wrapped in banana leaf with the masala as well besides it. One of the signature dishes of kerala.. a must try! Nxt up was the rabbit.. Yes u heard me right.. Rabbit..a semi dry preparation.. Good blend of spices into the soft meat of rabbit. Nxt in line was clams... the meat rolled into tiny balls.. again a semi dry preparation. Clams in kerala are made without shells..again typical to this place. Lastly thr ws kozhuva fry... tiny fish-kozhuva.. deep fried.. smaller than the onion slices..crisp n crunch. Dont wanna stretch this post talking about the prawns as well. There are fish gravies available as well.. strong tamarind based ones.. And yes thrs chicken as well.. which i didnt taste (chicken should be last on ur mind🙂)
All n all.. awesome non veg food. Its a no frills place.. Don't come here for ambience or fine dining....Explore the wide variety of non veg spread and wash it down with the kalla(toddy).. When in kerala..a must visit!!

Resurrection time for the voyagers !!
One of the most common breakfast item from the gods own country. Appam and egg (motta in mallu) curry. The appam being the keralite version of a dosa..with a thick base in the centre. The thick base is owing to the pan in which it is made..its called "Appachetty".. can be bought on Amazon. The appam batter consists of rice and urad dal (soaked overnight) and some cooked rice. You will definitely enjoy the thick part which is kind of the USP of the appam for me. Goes well with any non veg and veg curry..typical combination being appam and stew. So when in kerala.. Pls go for the appam!!

When it comes to Chicken and fish Kebabs, here’s a place I’ve been visiting from almost 20 years now. Mini Punjab at GTB Nagar (Sion Koliwada) Few times we’ve dined here but mostly takeaway.
Dig in the succulent Chicken seek, Tangdi Kebab, Chicken white tandoori, fish tandoori, Chicken Kaleji, etc etc.
All this has to be enjoyed hot !!
In a nutshell - Great taste and Pure value for money.

Be it a Tuesday, Thursday OR auspicious days like Sankasthi, Angarika etc wherein “Veg” is the theme of the day. For a pukka non veg like me, always a challenge where do we go on such days.
One of the very good veg Maharashtrian food joint in Borivali west called Girgaon Katta. I have always been a fan of Girgaon Katta’s Misal and Poha but this place kindoff surprised me pleasantly with it’s lunch offerings. Despite we mainly had snacks but they were quite filing and no need to have a square lunch after that.
Apart from their signature Misal Pav, The Piping hot Puris with batatyachi (potato) Bhaji were awesome. Aamras complemented it nicely. Kothimbir Vadis (Coriander cakes) were nicely made - hot and crispy. Thalipeeth (savoury multigrain pancake) was made to perfection and came with a generous scoop of home made butter (Loni). And to wash off of this down - what’s better than a cool glass of Kairi Panhe (raw mango juice) sprinkled with Elaichi and Kesar (Cardamom and Saffron)...

Got a chance to visit the city of Golden temple and some really helpful people.. Amritsar!!. On our (me and wifey) wishlist was a place called Charming chicken (yes that's the name) which the locals weren't aware of surprisingly. This joint is rated no 2 on TripAdvisor but to our bad luck it was closed due to Navratri.
So while checking through Zomato learned about this joint nearby which is "Beera Chicken House". They have a takeaway joint functioning separately which was more crowded. We went into the restaurant section. The first thing that was kept on the table was a plate full of onions and a chutney. This got me interested!!. For starters there was roast chicken..they serve quarter, half and full proportions. We went for half. Extremely juicy till the bone, well cooked inside out. Finger licking to be precise. Next up had to be butter chicken. Well, I ain't no judge of which is THE Butter Chicken, but this one was altogether different from what I have had in Mumbai all these years. Not sweet at all, huge chunks of chicken. Loved it entirely!!!
This place isn't for the ambience but for the good food. I am not sure if they accept cards but I paid in cash. The waiters were very humble and they keep checking on you.

If you love chicken(who doesn't), this place is definitely worth visiting. Ola is available quite easily within amritsar and even the auto guys are aware of this place. Here's the Zomato link for further info

On the same night went to a sweet joint after the dinner here, will post separately!!!

Culinary Voyagers recently visited Tarkarli - In the Konkan Maharashtra region.
TARKARLI - not only boasts of great beaches, amazing water sports, Scuba diving and lovely nature,, it is quite famous for its incredible and sensational food !!!!
Post an amazing train journey from Mumbai to Kudal (via Janshatabdi Vistadome), we headed to the prominent and much talked about Khanaval (Homely restaurant in Marathi) called “”Pankaj Bhavujinchi Khanaval””
Reading their reviews, we knew we hit home run right away!
We knew what was coming - The kokan belt known typically for it's awesomely cooked prawns, clams, surmai, pomphret, and various other dishes.
Apart from succulent Chicken and Mutton rice plates, we ordered fried version of prawns, surmai , promfret , bangda etc.
Then came the lipta masala (thick gravy) version of
crab, clamps , prawns which were truly to die for, just right in size and just cooked to perfection.
But teesrya (Clamps) masala was a winner hands down. (We devoured 7-8 plates of clamps in a sitting)
Couldn't resist nor can ever forget the taste this lifetime. The chicken thali was great, chicken was cooked in kokani masala with lots of Indian spices.. chapati's (phulka's) were coming on our table right from the stove and you couldn't ask for anything more.. To top it all up dessert was sheera and then Sol kadi just to help all of the above digest!
In a Nutshell - A must visit place if you are going to Tarkarli !!!
Note: This is a lunch only place viz operation only in the afternoons.
