Deductions under section 80C to 80U are allowed from gross total income to compute total income however deduction is allowed only from normal income.

Deductions are not allowed from-

i) Long term capital gains, Section 112
ii) Casual income, Section 58(4)
iii) Short term capital gains on sale of short term equity shares or short term units of equity oriented mutual funds provided securities transaction tax has been paid, Section 111A
iv) Long term capital gains on sale of long term equity shares or long term units of equity oriented mutual funds provided securities transaction tax has been paid, Section 112A

Important money and tax compliances to be done by July 31

1. As per CBDT press release, an individual whose self-assessment tax liability exceeds Rs 1 lakh, the last day to pay self-assessment tax without any penal interest is July 31, 2020. If such tax is paid after the date, then penal interest at the rate of 1% per month will be levied.

2. Last date for filing ITR (original and revised) for AY 2018-19 is July 31, 2020. If an individual does not file the belated or revised ITR, if due, by the deadline (i.e., July 31), then he/she will not be able to file and/or revise the ITR for the financial year 2018-19.

3. To provide relief to employers and to provide higher take home pay to employees, the government had reduced the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) contribution for May, June and July, 2020. Therefore, from next month, employees’ deduction as well as employers’ contribution to EPF will be made at the normal rate of 12% instead of the reduced 10%.

4. The deadline to make tax-saving investments like PPF for FY 2019-20 was extended to July 31, 2020. If you miss this deadline, you will not be able to claim deductions in respect of the same.

5. Last date to file TDS and TCS statement for FY 2019-20 has been extended to July 31, 2020.
