On , we celebrate strong women like Sheela who take the lead in training India's future experts.

When Sheela Rani first entered the ecosystem as a trainee, she was struck by the low number of female students in her cohort. It was then and there that she decided to opt for a teaching career and to focus on female candidates interested in hands-on trades such as , , , and . “Girls and boys should be encouraged equally for all trades, especially for trades involving practical aspects”, she states. Today, Sheela works towards improving the support services offered to female candidates at her institute and supports her students in developing an ”I can do” mindset.

On , we celebrate strong women like Priyanka who take the lead in training India's future experts.

After completing her MBA in Finance and Marketing, Priyanka Majumdar went from working as an associate consultant for a financial services company in Hyderabad to the position of business development manager at a solar solutions company. It was quite early on in her career that she realised that she enjoyed imparting training and knowledge. After shifting to Guwahati, she therefore applied for a position as Assistant Professor at Jagiroad College, a pioneer college for Management. Although the college generally prefers male candidates, Priyanka outperformed her competition and was soon charged with running a whole department. Today, she teaches the Retail Services course at the North-East Skill Center (NESC) in and strives to inspire in her trainees the same and ambition that carried her through her own professional life. When asked for her secret to success, she responds: “I would not settle for anything less than what I deserved and truly wanted”.

On , we celebrate strong women like Ritu who take the lead in training India's future experts.

After completing her B. Tech. in and Engineering, Ritu Shukla worked as an Assistant Professor and Engineering Assistant for ten years before joining the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) in as a trainer. Although NSTI Allahabad is a -only institute, many parents are hesitant to allow their daughters to pursue training and placement opportunities in the industry. Ritu feels that there is a need to improve the image and level of awareness about vocational education and training and to encourage female trainees to take up apprenticeships and jobs. “There are risks in all aspects of life, even in marriage. I therefore counsel all the girls in my class to be independent, to earn and to make their own identity”, she explains.

On , we celebrate strong women like Harshada who take the lead in training India's future experts.

In her capacity as an ITI instructor in , Harshada Sunil Joshi has been training students for more than 25 years. When she first started working, she found that many institutes were ill-equipped to respond to the needs of female trainers and trainees. Since then, the situation has gradually improved. As more and more women are following Harshada’s example, the benefits of gender-balanced faculties and cohorts become evident: “Wherever there are women, huge changes in the learning atmosphere and the discipline of students are clearly visible”, she says. Along with Harshada, we encourage VET providers to facilitate -sensitive learning and training opportunities for all.
