Is the productivity of the shop floor the responsibility of the production department only?

I have seen factories where the HR function engages with the shop floor workers and sorts their matters with the production department.

Purchase function visiting the shop floor and involving themselves in production to find the performance of new material or material sourced from new suppliers.

Maintenance & tool room function mostly engages with machine operators but in the first run of a new product, they keenly observe the machine and tool performance.

Much depends on cross functional and cross hierarchical engagement between different roles.

Where productivity is everyone's responsibility, the work culture is altogether different from what we usually see in factories.

"How does the management know on a daily basis that the workers have cleaned their machines and have done the 5S work in the assigned time? Should a video come to us or images?", asked the owner of the factory during the training session today.

Does this question reflect some control or does it help the factory owners aspiration towards empowerment & ownership in the employees?

What is the answer to such a thought process?

People work their best when they are encouraged. They feel the freedom to work and contribute their best. They feel empowered.

Global Gallup survey suggests 11% improvement in profitability by mere encouragement. That is HUGE.

While companies are loosing money on other counts because of price-rise and low productivity, how about empowering your own people.

60% of the employees are not cared by their Supervisor/ Manager.

How can an employee perform to their optimum, if they are not cared for or their voice remain unheard? On one hand industry is facing the challenge of non-availability of employees & absenteeism on the other hand middle management does not care about their employees. Global estimates suggest 41% of absenteeism could be reduced by a caring attitude towards employees.

Industry needs to create a productive work culture.
