A Decade After Approval, Anantnag's Scientific Waste Management Project Remains Stalled

Muneeb-Ul-Islam

Anantnag, June 6, KNT: Nearly ten years after land was identified for a scientific Solid Waste Management (SWM) facility in South Kashmir's Anantnag district, the project remains incomplete, forcing municipal waste to pile up and raising concerns about environmental degradation, public health and sanitation.

The proposed facility, planned at Urnhall-Batengo on around 70 to 80 kanals of land, was conceived in 2014 to scientifically process municipal waste generated by Anantnag and adjoining urban areas. The project, estimated to cost around ₹4 crore, was designed to handle approximately 115 metric tonnes of waste daily.

However, despite the passage of almost a decade, the facility has yet to become operational.

Residents say the delay has contributed to indiscriminate dumping of garbage at multiple locations, including roadsides, open spaces and areas close to water bodies.

The issue has assumed significance as Anantnag, often referred to as the "Land of Springs," is home to several important streams and water resources, including the Sandran, Brengi, Arpath and Lidder.

Locals fear that unmanaged waste is increasingly finding its way into watercourses, particularly during rainfall when garbage is washed downstream.

“The garbage ultimately reaches streams and springs. Water sources that once remained pristine are showing signs of pollution,” said local resident Sajad Ahmad Wani.

Apart from environmental concerns, residents say the growing volume of municipal waste has become a major sanitation challenge and poses risks to public health.

Many have questioned why a project announced years ago remains stuck despite repeated assurances from authorities.

When contacted, Executive Officer of Municipal Committee Anantnag, Mirza Aadil Beigh, acknowledged the delay and said pending No Objection Certificates (NOCs) had slowed progress.

“The project has been delayed due to certain pending NOCs. Once the required clearances are obtained, work will be initiated immediately,” he said.

Beigh added that some machinery required for the facility has already been procured and expressed hope that work would begin once approvals are secured.

People, meanwhile, have urged the government to expedite the clearance process and complete the long-awaited project, arguing that a scientific waste management system is essential to protect Anantnag's environment, water resources and public health. [KNT]

Kashmir gears up for Amarnath Yatra from July 3; Div Com says high pilgrim turnout expected

Registrations show encouraging trend, comprehensive plan in place for hassle-free, secure experience on Pahalgam, Baltal routes

Jahangeer Ganaie

Anantnag, May 30 (KNO): With preparations gathering pace for the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has intensified efforts to ensure the smooth, safe and successful conduct of the 57-day pilgrimage scheduled to commence on July 3, 2026.

Authorities on Saturday said that registrations from across the country have shown an encouraging trend, indicating a substantial turnout of devotees for one of India's most revered spiritual journeys.

To assess the readiness of various departments and agencies involved in the Yatra, Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Ansul Garg, chaired a high-level review meeting in Pahalgam, the traditional base camp for the pilgrimage. Senior civil and police officers, representatives of security agencies, district administrations, and officials from multiple line departments responsible for the annual pilgrimage attended the meeting.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Garg, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), expressed satisfaction over the pace of preparations and said that the administration is working on a comprehensive plan to provide a hassle-free and secure pilgrimage experience to devotees.

"Registrations for the Yatra were received, and the response has been very encouraging. We expect a significant number of pilgrims this year. Today's review meeting was aimed at assessing preparedness, identifying any gaps and ensuring that all departments work in close coordination to provide the best possible facilities to yatris," he said.

The meeting focused on a wide range of arrangements required for the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage, including accommodation facilities, healthcare services, sanitation measures, traffic regulation, drinking water supply, electricity, communication networks and disaster response preparedness along both the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route.

The Div Com said that all stakeholders, including hoteliers, ponywalas, and others, who also attended the meeting, provided positive feedback on the successful conduct of the Yatra, as they have experience and have been part of the pilgrimage in past years as well.

He reviewed the progress of infrastructure development and maintenance works being carried out ahead of the pilgrimage season, and special attention was paid to ensuring that all facilities are completed and made operational well before the arrival of the first batch of pilgrims.

During the meeting, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, Dr Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, presented a detailed briefing on the arrangements being undertaken by the district administration. He outlined the status of ongoing works, preparedness of lodging facilities, sanitation management plans, healthcare infrastructure and the coordination mechanism established among departments to ensure uninterrupted services during the Yatra period.

Div Com Garg said the successful conduct of the pilgrimage depends on seamless inter-departmental coordination and timely ex*****on of assigned responsibilities. He directed all concerned agencies to expedite pending works and maintain strict adherence to deadlines.

"Our objective is to ensure that every pilgrim undertakes the sacred journey in a safe, comfortable and well-managed environment. All departments must remain proactive, responsive and fully prepared before the commencement of the Yatra," he said.

Healthcare preparedness emerged as one of the key focus areas during the review. Authorities discussed deployment of medical teams at strategic locations, establishment of emergency healthcare units, availability of ambulances and oxygen support systems, and stocking of essential medicines to tackle medical emergencies, particularly considering the high-altitude terrain and challenging weather conditions.

Security arrangements also figured prominently in the discussions, with officials reviewing plans to maintain a robust security grid throughout the pilgrimage period. Measures relating to crowd management, surveillance, emergency response and smooth movement of pilgrims along the Yatra routes were thoroughly assessed.

Traffic management strategies aimed at ensuring hassle-free movement of pilgrims and minimising disruptions on major roads were also reviewed.

Officials discussed plans for regulating vehicular movement, improving parking facilities and strengthening communication systems for real-time coordination during the pilgrimage.

The annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, which attracts lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad, holds immense religious significance.

Officials present at the meeting assured the Divisional Commissioner that all arrangements are being implemented on a priority basis and that preparations are progressing according to schedule to facilitate the successful and peaceful conduct of the Annual Amarnath Yatra 2026—(KNO)

False R**e Case: Man Acquitted After 19 Months in Jail; Court Orders Probe Against Police Officials, Complainant

JAMMU, May 30: In a significant ruling, a Fast Track Court in Jammu has acquitted a man who spent more than one year and seven months in prison in a r**e case, observing that the allegations against him remained unsubstantiated and that the investigation was seriously flawed.

The judgment was delivered by Amarjeet Singh Langeh, who held that there was no credible evidence on record to prove that the alleged offence had taken place. The court termed the prosecution's story as “highly improbable” and unsupported by facts.

The accused remained incarcerated for one year, seven months and eleven days before being cleared of all charges. The court pointed out major contradictions in the prosecution's case, including the absence of corroborative medical evidence, unexplained delay in lodging the FIR, and failure of investigators to gather essential material evidence.

The judgment noted that despite allegations of repeated sexual assault, the medical examination conducted shortly after registration of the case revealed no signs of force, injury, or recent sexual activity.

Criticising the investigation, the court observed that crucial evidence was overlooked, CCTV footage was not properly analysed, key witnesses were not examined, and the probe appeared to have been conducted in a careless and manipulated manner.

Taking serious note of these shortcomings, the court directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu, to initiate a departmental inquiry against the Investigating Officer (IO) and the then Station House Officer (SHO) involved in the case.

The court also instructed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, to begin legal proceedings against the complainant for allegedly furnishing false information. Additionally, an inquiry was ordered into the role of two persons who allegedly facilitated the registration of the case, with criminal action to follow if misconduct is established.

The prosecution was represented by advocate Ajay Dogra, while advocate Anil Sharma appeared for the accused.
