The new set of articulated paper dolls and bookmark from the Owl'sAwl is inspired by the traditional costumes worn by the Malabar gentry.
While the garb of the male doll is based on the formal Durbar attire of the nobility, the female doll is depicted in a traditional 'mundum neriyathum,' the quintessential Malayali attire. Her hair is tied in the typical Malabar style and she carries a palm-leaf fan in her hand. The ‘neriyath’ bordered with a wide gold thread ‘kasavu’ indicate her upper-class background while the green velvet blouse points to the shifting fashion trends of the late nineteenth century. The open book suggests her being educated and knowledgeable.
The bookmark offers a glimpse of a few old-style jewellery pieces such as the 'pichimottu mala' and the gold bangles. The ornate ‘Netturpetti’ used for storing jewellery and the 'val-kannadi' with its beautifully carved frame are a treat for the eyes.
