Mythological Significance

Hinduism

Kailash Parvat is said to be House of Shiva. The peak is of special importance for Hindu in many ways. Many mythologies or stories refer to it as Place of residence of Shiva and is an ultimate destination of souls. The different Puranas hold that the parvat that is having four faces are made up of crystal, ruby, gold, and lapis lazuli and is surrounded by six mountain ranges which symbolizes a lotus. Many Certain traditions also says that the mountain peak is Shiva’s linga and the Lake Mansarovar is the yoni of his love, Shakti (Parvati). Some Legends also says that Lake Mansarovar was formed by the Mind of Lord Bramha after that it was evidenced on earth. It is the abode of lord Shiva and his divine consort Parvati. It expounds the philosophy of Purusha and Prakriti - Shiva and Shakti.

Jainism

According to Jainism, the Mansarovar Lake is said to be in association with Lord Shree Rishabhdev, the 1st Tirthankara of Jains. Buddhism

The ta***ic of Buddhism regard Mount Kailash as the holy fortress of Buddha Shakyamuni (Chakrasamvara) a wrathful deity with four faces and twelve hands, who is also said to symbolize eternal joy. The peak of Mount Kailash is also a symbol of pride as this battleground witnessed the victory of Ta***ic Buddhism over the origination of Bon religion. Legends have to say that the champions of the two faiths Milarepa (Ta***ic Buddhism) and Naro-Bon-Chung (Champion of Bon) wants to prove their superiority of their respective faiths through a race to the summit. Although Milarepa chose to give his rival a head start, his acquired power through meditation (during Bon’s flight to the summit) enabled him to clinch a win at the nick of time. The Mansarovar Lake is also associated with Buddhists and is known as Anotatta in Pali and Anavatapta in Sanskrit. The lake is considered legendary as it is said to be the place where Queen Maya conceived Buddha. There also are a few Buddhist Monasteries located at the shore of the lake.
