Apis cerena indica (Indian honey bee) is a subspecies of the Apis cerena(Asiatic honey bee) species of bees and is typically found in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other mainland Asia countries. It is domesticated in these regions though its honey yield is lesser than that of Apis mellifera, the European honey bee.
Similar but slightly smaller than Apis mellifera, the Indian honey bee (Apis cerena indica) lives in tree hollows and manmade structures. It builds multiple. combed hives. The hives have only a few thousand workers as compared to European honey bee hives that have 50,000 or more workers. Nesting habits of Apis cerena indica make them suitable even for mountain regions with prolonged winters. Further, these bees are nonaggressive and less prone to swarming hence quite suitable for bee farming.
This bee is normally yellow and black in colour and has four yellow abdominal stripes. The abdominal stripes are more pronounced than those in European bees (Apis mellifera). Apis cerena indica measures about 10 mm.

🐝 Did You Know About the Indian Honey Bee? 🐝
Apis cerana indica, also known as the Indian honey bee, is a fascinating subspecies of the Apis cerana (Asiatic honey bee) and is commonly found in regions across India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other parts of mainland Asia. While it may not produce as much honey as the European honey bee (Apis mellifera), it is highly valued in its native regions for its adaptability and unique characteristics.
🔹 Physical Features: The Indian honey bee is slightly smaller than the European honey bee, measuring around 10 mm. It has a striking appearance with its yellow and black body and four distinct yellow abdominal stripes that are more pronounced than those of European bees.
🔹 Habitat & Nesting: These bees are known for their ability to thrive in a variety of environments. They build multiple combed hives in tree hollows or man-made structures and typically have smaller colonies, with only a few thousand workers compared to the massive hives of European bees, which can have over 50,000. This makes them perfect for beekeeping, especially in mountain regions with harsh winters.
🔹 Behavior & Farming Benefits: One of the best things about Apis cerana indica is that they are non-aggressive and less likely to swarm, making them an ideal choice for beekeepers. Their calmer nature and resilience to cooler climates make them great for sustainable beekeeping practices.
Let's celebrate these hardworking bees and the essential role they play in nature! 🌸🍯

🌿🐝 The Rock Bee (Apis dorsata) 🐝🌿
Did you know that the Rock Bee is the largest member of the Apis species? 🐝 Native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, these magnificent bees can be found across China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Their hives, which can grow up to 3 feet in length and 2 feet in width, are often seen hanging from towering trees, mountain caves, water tanks, or even the arches of dams.
Due to their aggressive nature, these bees cannot be reared like other bee species. However, ethical honey harvesting from their naturally occurring hives is possible – but it requires specialized training. This process ensures the safety of both the beekeeper and the bees, allowing for sustainable and responsible honey collection.
While their hives are easily visible in open spaces, the Rock Bee's incredible size and nature make them a fascinating part of our ecosystem. 🌱
Stay tuned with Agrikaash for more valuable insights on beekeeping, agripreneurship, and sustainable growth.
