LDC - The Literary and Debating Club, BITS Goa

LDC - The Literary and Debating Club, BITS Goa We're a bunch of avid readers, funny writers, debaters, loony comedians and more. We value the ability to take a joke higher than the ability to crack one.

WHAT WE DO:

We find humour in the strangest little things. As far as mixing work and play is concerned, we have thin lines between the two. Our main events throughout the year are:

• Contention - The Waves Debate, part of Waves, the annual cultural fest, in which colleges from all over the country participate. Since 2013, Contention has been a national-level affair.

• Carpe Dictum – A 3

day lit-fest taking place during Waves, with talks by eminent personalities along with fun events like JAMs, Word Games, Crosswords, Quizzes, and Poetry Slam.

• SchoolBag – A debate for high school children of Goa, conducted during Quark, the annual techno-management fest.

• BITS Debating League – a week-long intra-college knockout-style recklessly-punctuated-with-witty-retorts debate tournament.

• Origins – A 4-day carnival of random, humorous events including but not limited to: JAMs, a creative writing contest and FunSpeak (a collection of informals) – used as an induction procedure for the club at the beginning of every year.

• Miscellaneous other intra-college events according to the whims of our members. For instance, an impromptu JAM session near the students’ favourite on-campus eatery and an open Spelling Bee competition.

• Occasional criticism of the term ‘li8’ and its usage while secretly admiring the sheer range of emotions it condenses into one syllable.

Greetings from The LDC!

We’re very excited to be back hosting InVerse as a part of this year’s Waves (13th - 14th November). We are now accepting video entries not exceeding a length of three minutes along with the written version of the piece, to aid in judging and/or subtitling the video if required. The competition will be conducted in two stages, with a preliminary round and a live finals during Waves.

Greetings from the Literary and Debating Club!

Tell a tale, build a backstory, construct a conflict, sketch a setting and let your imagination run wild in our pre-induction writing contest: “Campfire Tales”.

In the images of this post are all the prompts. The first prompt is a picture, based on which you can write a story or a poem. The second is a list of characters with a brief description of their personalities, quirks and appearances. If you choose to use the second prompt, try to include as many of the characters as possible within your story.

We understand that your mid-semester exams are starting soon, and as such we’re accepting entries until 12th January. There is no word limit, nor a limit on the number of entries. We will be putting up the best entries on our page, and winners get a direct pass to the final round of inductions! We look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Mail your submissions to [email protected]

Greetings!

Given that most of us are stuck at home, we thought it might be fun to channel our thoughts and creativity into a piece of writing. The LDC presents the Summer Writing Contest, open to anyone who wants to participate.

Given in the post is a picture prompt, which is intended to serve as inspiration. Obviously, the image is open to multiple interpretations, so feel free to be creative. All entries must be based on the prompt, though there is no restriction on the kind of entry. They can be short stories, poems, essays or anything that strikes you as interesting.

The contest ends on the 20th June, and all entries have to be emailed to [email protected] in a PDF/Doc format.

The winners will be announced on Facebook and Instagram, so keep checking in!

We're really excited to see the kind of pieces we get.

For any further queries, feel free to contact the numbers mentioned in the posters or message this page directly.

We are proud to share our achievements for the second semester of the 2019-20 calendar year. We had the opportunity to participate in multiple debate tournaments, and owing to the pandemic, multiple online tournaments as well. Here are some of the highlights:

Our novices proved themselves by doing extremely well at the COEP Parliamentary Debate, held at The College of Engineering, Pune. Anirudh Srivastava and Bhargav Kulkarni were able to reach the novice semi-finals, and the team consisting of Pranav Goyal and Abhijeet Anil Kumar were part of the novice grand finals. First timers Yashee Sinha and Aoishi Chakrabarti were able to break as adjudicators.

At the same tournament, Aditya Sunkara and Suhas Prasanna reached the open finals and Yash Chaturvedi was the third best speaker overall.

At the ILS Parliamentary Debate held in Pune, our team consisting of Aditya Sunkara, Yash Chaturvedi and Suhas Prasanna reached the Semi Finals, while Anirudh Srivastava broke as an adjudicator.

The ongoing pandemic saw many tournaments cancelled, which gave us the opportunity to participate at multiple online tournaments, including international ones.

Yash Chaturvedi and Suhas Prasanna were able to reach the Quarterfinals at Berlin IV (Germany). At the Ullens Online Debating Championship (Nepal), Yash was the best adjudicator. Suhas was the best speaker at the IIT-Bombay ProAm Debate Tournament, and was also a finalist along with Raghav Mangalapalli and Abhijit Vadavalli from NALSAR.

At the inaugural Inter-BITS Parliamentary Tournament, BITS Goa bagged all the four grand finals spots and the tournament was won by Suhas Prasanna and Aniket Agarwal. BITS Goa was also able to bag the top 5 speaker spots, with Yash Chaturvedi bagging the best speaker prize.

Shoutout to Abhijit Vadavalli, our former debate head, who was invited to adjudicate at ILS PD, AODC, SSE PD and at the VIT Round Robin. He was also a Core Adjudicator at the Inter BITS tournament.

[EDIT: Registrations have now closed.]

Some people are just a little more skeptical-- they won't accept everything at face value. Their inquisitive minds must fight to know why and be right. Are you one of them?

If so, then welcome to the BITS Debating League, presented to you by the LDC, where one and all are welcome to prove their mettle and stake a claim for the BDL trophy. It'll take a strong challenger to make it through fierce debates and stand victorious.

Don't worry about debating experience-- if you can make a point, you can earn a point. Register now through the link below. We hope to see you soon!

Our debating society has always been about getting together the most ardent and talented debaters from BITS Goa and giving them a platform to perfect the craft or even simply enjoy the hobby. Here’s a look at all our speakers who made the college proud by representing BITS Goa at tournaments across the country this semester and securing some spectacular finishes at the end of it all.

Our second-year team of Vidhi Rai and Oindrila Ghosh finished winners in the novice category of the SLS Pune PD in their first tournament as debaters. Stalwarts of the debating society, Yash Chaturvedi and Suhas Prasanna, impressed yet again by recording consecutive finals appearances in the MSRMPD and NALSAR IV. Both of them were adjudged joint fourth-best speakers at MSRMPD and Yash placed in the top 10 at NALSAR IV. The duo followed these up with a quarterfinals finish at the recently concluded IIT Bombay PD. Huge shoutout to our ex-Debate Head Abhijit who was deemed the best internal adjudicator at NALSAR IV; we're proud of you.

However, the semester is not over yet with buzzing excitement for Contention: BITS Goa’s annual debate tournament happening this weekend. We hope to see y’all there!
