📍A non healing Facial Ulcers in Cats – Could It Be Cryptococcosis?

We recently examined a cat with a persistent ulcerative lesion on the face. One possible cause of such lesions is cryptococcosis, a fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus species. This disease commonly enters through the nasal cavity and may lead to nasal discharge, sneezing, swelling over the nose and face, non-healing ulcers, eye involvement, and in advanced cases, neurological signs.

🎧 The EarPod Tragedy – Bella’s Unexpected Snack!

Bella, a playful and curious dog, started vomiting her food repeatedly for two days. Despite trying to eat, she could not keep anything down. Her worried owners also noticed that one of their wireless EarPods had mysteriously gone missing.
Suspecting that Bella might have swallowed it, they brought her to Felican Pet Hospital for examination. An abdominal X-ray confirmed their fear—the missing EarPod was sitting inside Bella’s stomach!
surgery was performed to remove it. The procedure was successful, and the missing EarPod was finally recovered from Bella’s stomach.

📍Giving Oral Medicine to a Turtle – The Safe Way
Administering oral medicine to turtles and tortoises requires patience, gentle handling, and proper technique. Forcefully opening the mouth or giving medicine too quickly can cause stress, injury, or even aspiration into the lungs.
In this case, the turtle was carefully restrained while the medicine was slowly given through the side of the mouth using a syringe. Proper positioning of the head and slow administration help ensure the medicine is swallowed safely.
Never attempt to give medicines meant for humans without veterinary advice. Reptiles have unique metabolism and dosage requirements, and incorrect treatment can be dangerous.

📍Hypertension in Dogs and Cats – A Silent Threat

High blood pressure in dogs and cats often develops secondary to diseases like kidney failure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism (especially in cats), Cushing’s disease, or heart problems. Many pets may not show obvious signs until serious damage occurs.
Possible signs include sudden blindness, bleeding inside the eye, dilated pupils, seizures, increased thirst and urination, or restlessness. Hypertension can lead to retinal detachment, hyphema, and glaucoma.
In cats, sudden blindness due to retinal detachment is one of the most common presentations of hypertension.
Regular blood pressure monitoring in sick or elderly pets can help detect the problem early and protect vital organs like the eyes, kidneys, heart, and brain.
Normal systolic blood pressure in dogs and cats is usually around 110–160 mmHg.

Sudden Swelling of All Mammary Glands in a Cat

This cat was presented with sudden enlargement and swelling of all mammary glands, a condition commonly seen in cats called Feline Mammary Fibroadenomatous Hyperplasia. It is usually associated with hormonal influence, especially progesterone, and can occur in young female cats, pregnant cats, The mammary glands may enlarge rapidly within a few days and can sometimes become painful, ulcerated, or infected if neglected. Early veterinary attention is important because this condition can often be managed medically without major surgery. Hormonal treatment with Aglepristone may be given in consultation with your veterinarian, along with supportive treatment depending on the severity of the condition. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can help achieve excellent recovery.

A Shih Tzu was presented with the entire eye appearing completely red. This condition was diagnosed as hyphema, meaning blood has accumulated inside the front chamber of the eye. It can occur due to trauma, severe inflammation, clotting problems, or underlying systemic diseases. The dog may experience pain, discomfort, and even loss of vision if not treated promptly.
Take-home message:
A “red-filled eye” is always an emergency—early veterinary care is essential to save vision.
