US Proposes Wider Section 232 Tariffs on Steel Derivatives

The US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has proposed extending Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum and copper to 14 additional derivative-product categories.

The proposed expansion covers a wide range of downstream products, including welding-machine parts, fire extinguishers, heat-exchanger parts, electric conductor cables, tanker trailers, agricultural trailers, mobile industrial equipment and other metal-intensive products.

Most of the proposed derivative products would face a 25% tariff if the measure is adopted. Agricultural trailers and semi-trailers would generally face a 15% tariff, while certain mobile industrial equipment would be subject to separate applicable rates.

The proposal also includes a 50% tariff on the steel value of certain filled steel containers carrying propane, oxygen or propylene. The move is aimed at preventing imports of downstream products from undermining existing Section 232 measures and strengthening US protection of its domestic metal industries.

Global Steel Rebar Market Set for Steady Growth Through 2034

U.S. Raw Steel Output Rises 4.9% Year-on-Year

U.S. raw steel production increased to 1.858 million net tons in the week ending July 25, 2026, with mills operating at 80.5% capacity, reflecting steady growth in domestic steelmaking activity. Production was 4.9% higher than the same week last year, when output stood at 1.771 million net tons and capacity utilization was 78.2%.

On a week-on-week basis, steel output also improved by 1.5%, rising from 1.830 million net tons in the week ending July 18, when mills operated at 79.3% capacity.

The latest figures highlight stable demand and improving operational efficiency across the U.S. steel industry, indicating positive momentum for manufacturers supported by healthy production levels and stronger mill utilization.
