Initially started out as just a hobby of knitting and crochet, Chindi has come a long way. Tanushri’s family runs a wholesale garment-manufacturing unit, which creates a usual amount of textile waste.
To feed her love for knitting and crochet, she used to utilize the textile waste that is called ‘Chindi’ by the textile industry, and make some small gifts for her friends and family. Realising that there was no end to the large amount of textile waste, she knew she had to do something about it. Tanushri eventually started working with the slum women in Mumbai, teaching and training them the art of knitting and creating a whole new range of upcycled and recycled products.
Her aim with this initiative is to make what she does so common, that all the fashion houses and other relevant organisations start upcycling and recycling their own waste to a point where organisations like Chindi don’t have to exist at all.
We salute her for her drive to make a difference so selflessly!
