Yellapur: Hanging Bridge Built after Two decades
Yellapur: People of Shivapura and other villages in Joida taluk no longer have to cross the Kodsalli Dam backwaters of Kali River on a wooden raft to reach Yellapur. The state government has constructed a hanging bridge across the backwaters, responding to the two-decade old demand of the villagers.
The bridge connecting Shivapura with Yellapur, was built by utilizing the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) - 19 of NABARD. The work had started on February 26 and was finished on August 25, one day before the six month deadline. Minister R V Deshpande inaugurated the bridge recently.
The total cost of the construction was Rs 3 crore. The bridge is 234 meters long and 1.50 meters wide and stands 22 meters above the ground level. Imported GI (galvanized iron) wires that are 48mm thick have been used and according to the company, the material will last for over 100 years.
The bridge connects Shivapura, Ulavi, Hebballa, Dehalli, Kattige and Ganeshgudi villages. Narayana, a villager told reporters: "We had been depending on the wooden raft to cross the river which was a nightmare during rainy season. We used to load motorcycles on the wooden board which capsized many times. People survived by holding on to the wires tied across the backwater."
Pregnant women struggled to cross the backwaters. In case of emergency, patients had to travel over a hundred kilometers to reach hospital in Yellapur. Thanks to the bridge, the distance has been shortened to 25 km.
The bridge will also help people visit Ullavi temple, Akallu Gavi, Panchalingeshwara Gavi, Mahamane gavi, Akka Nagammana Gavi, Vibhuti Mantapa, Rudrakshi Mantapa and Haralayyana Chilume. Tourists can also visit Channabasaveshwara and Satoddi falls with ease.
