Priscila Rooxo (b. 2001) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.

At only 17, Rooxo received a Painting scholarship from Rede NAMI to attend the prestigious Parque Lage School of Visual Arts. In 2021, she began studying at UERJ, while maintaining a collaboration with civic organisations and movements, including NAMI Rede Feminista de Arte Urbana.

In September 2022, the artist, one of the youngest and most promising currently working in Brazil, was awarded the FOCO Prize at ArtRio with her solo show A Mãe ta On [Mother’s On].

Her work is a reflection on the territorial, gender and class issues experienced in the region she lives in, an area known for high violence and criminality rates and a lack of basic services and infrastructures. Based on an activist and critical practice, Priscila Rooxo’s paintings explore themes such as poverty, maternity, social exclusion, the recognition of women’s role in society, and the peripheral body and its relationship with notions of social belonging and visibility to subvert habitual cultural classifications and distinctions, namely between high and mass culture.

Rooxo’s practice is visibly influenced by graffiti and the cultural manifestations commonly associated with Rio’s periphery

Interlude for Revolutionaries
(The Destruction of the Idols of Ka’ba), 2023 Carbonized wood, charcoal, concrete, fabric, plaster, lead, iron, clay, spicepowders

Monia Ben Hamouda (1991, Milan) graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Brera Academy, Milan.
Following the belief that each individual is inextricably connected to their family tree and the psychological universe of their ancestors, Ben Hamouda attempts to master her influences in a contemporary and constantly changing landscape. Born into a Muslim community as the daughter of an Islamic calligrapher, Ben Hamouda navigates and confronts her generational heritage through what she calls
a shamanic process – creating works that act as gestural exorcisms of the expectations placed upon her by tradition and the politicized present, drawing their power from the urgency of expression. Her visual language, which translates into a broad range of formal approaches, is steeped in cultural-religious symbology and rituals. Often, her work
is covered in fragrant spices and powders to be protected
by their medicinal, ceremonial, culinary and ritualistic properties used for thousands of years.

To The Hunted, May You Continue To Be Their Worst Nightmare is the third intervention relating to an interpretation of the myth of Many-Headed Hydra - a subchapter of White’s thesis titled “Shipwreck(ed)”. Rooted in abolition and hydrarchy (from below), the Shipwreck(ed) questions the possibility of true emancipation whilst being contained by the Ship (the state, the Nation-State, the Capitalocene, the Human) and therefore seeks a Black Future through the obliteration of the Ship through its defeat at sea.
