Nurnet - Ancient Sardinia's Archaeology

Nurnet - Ancient Sardinia's Archaeology Nurnet project aims at uncovering and spreading knowledge about the immense historical and archaeological heritage of Sardinia.

Sardinia is much much more than sun and beaches, it's a gorgeous open air archeological treasure to discover. Among the goals set by the NURNET project, along with the Census and the touristic development of several sites of the prehistoric nuragic Sardinian territory, there are also those linked to archaeological survey and scientific disclosure of these monuments.

IOLAUS AND THE THESPIAN KINGS
The son of Ificles and Automedusa, he was Heracles' nephew and friend.
He is often referred to as the charioteer and companion of Heracles, and sometimes authors (Plutarch, Euripides) refer to him as the pederastic beloved (eromenos) of Heracles and other mythological characters, such as Ion or Asclepius. Iolaus' propensity to indulge in male love in myth made him unsuitable for literary development.
Iolaus led the Tespiads and Athenians to Sardinia where he founded cities, temples, public buildings, courts, ...
Iolaus and the Thespiades were buried in Sardinia.
Gaius Julius Solinus states that: "The Aeolians, whom he so called, added a temple to his tomb, because he had delivered Sardinia from so many evils. (Wikipedia)

"...the absence of protective walls in the villages and the varying articulation and grandeur of the nuraghi are signs of a hierarchical society dominated by chiefs. Necessarily, the nuraghi equipped with outer walls and defended by a garrison of soldiers, i.e., the palaces of the tribal chiefs, should be recognized in the kingdoms of the "thespian kings" Iolaioi, i.e., Iliesians, about whom Diodorus Siculus and other Greek authors hand down.
They tell of 40, now 43 or 50 "thespian kings" at the head of the Iolaioi, a number that tends to coincide with that of the nuraghi with outer forfied walls. " (2016 Ugas)

The towering nuraghe "Sa Fraigada," in the territory of Sinnai, is a single tower located a few dozen meters from the summit of Mount Cresia. The ancient nuragic building has suffered major collapses, so much so that its original planimetry is barely understandable. The diameter of the circular tower is about 8 meters and remains visible for a residual height of 3.70 meters on its southwestern side. The construction was made of large rough-hewn boulders arranged in fairly regular rows. The monument was built on a rocky outcrop in a large plain called "of the horses" because of the equines that abound free and wild. The mistral often blows in the area, making the plateau frosty in winter but cool in summer. No matter what season you visit, this place radiates a special energy: it allows you to breathe the purest air and be in contact with unspoiled nature.

Dolmens of Luras

Dolmen Ladas (photos 1/2/3) and
Dolmen Ciuledda (photos 4/5)

Luras is probably one of the towns in Sardinia with the highest density of Dolmens besides preserving beautiful millennia-old wild olive trees.
These burial monuments, dated thanks to artifacts found at the site, were erected in the 3rd millennium BC.
They are easy to reach and well marked and futhermore are, in my opinion, among the most beautiful in Sardinia.

Walk around NURAGHE LOSA.
Nuraghe Losa

I hadn't visited it in 30 years,but it was exactly as I remembered it,great!
A user-friendly site for everyone, really well kept with good guides.
Some photos regarding the exterior of the monument, where two of the corbels that were part of the terraced crowning of the nuraghe can still be admired in their original position.
The Nuraghe can easily be found in
Abbasanta territory just on the side of SS131, Sardinia's main highway.

The tomb of giants of Saint Cosimo, in Gonnosfanadiga, also known as "Sa Grutta de Santu Giuanni, "was considered by the 'father' of Sardinian archaeology Giovanni Lilliu...the largest tomb of giants known until then: it is thirty meters long and its exedra is 26 meters wide. It was built of granite, coming from the surrounding area. Based on the artifacts found in and around it, the dating of the monument has been placed between the 15th and 14th centuries B.C., during the Middle Bronze Age.

The facade is typical of giants' tombs in south-central Sardinia, that is, with rows and architraved entrance without stelae. Along the outer perimeter we notice stones leaning against the base, forming a step: this solution served two purposes, to make the structure more solid and to prevent rainwater infiltration. A small corridor leads into the chamber itself, which has a rectangular floor plan and a truncated-ogival section. The original floor, which has survived only in a few spots, consisted of a covering of polished stones of different sizes and pebbles, laid over a natural granite rock counter." (Sardinia Tourism)
In the vicinity of this tomb of giants are the remains of two other tombs of the same name.

The archaeological structure of Spadula, which is also in the territory of Gonnosfanadiga, is probably of Nuragic age and has rectilinear wall traces delimiting a rectangular shape oriented according to the longitudinal north-south axis. It seems likely that for the later constructions of the enclosure and the hovel, stones were used that were removed from the ancient building, which, due to its shape and features noticeable at first glance, resembles a megaron temple.

The photos of the tomb of giants of San Cosimo, in Gonnosfanadiga, are by Lucia Corda, Bibi Pinna, Antonello Gregorini, Francesca Cossu, Alberto Valdès and Billy W***y Valanga Mariani.

NURAGHE BARRU
A less well-known but just as majestic as the most famous Nuragic palace stands on a hill in Trexenta in central southern Sardinia, with many secrets to be yet unveiled.
It is located on top of a limestone rise overlooking the plain below, which is shared between the towns of Guasila and Guamaggiore.
This monument was built in several stages out of largely squared blocks of limestone marl arranged in regular rows.
Formed by a central, north-facing keep, elliptical in shape, to which are attached, by means of curtain walls, the two side towers with a circular plan.
A stronghold of the surrounding area, it guards the memory of its ancient visitors. It has recounted in the course of excavation campaigns and sometimes provided welcomed surprises. These include, for example, the presence of many silos for the storage of supplies; and also of several stairways, which make the plan of the building even more articulated.
In the courtyard there is also a small room equipped with a tank well where animal and human bones were found (the skeleton found, from the Nuragic period, must have belonged to a man of impressive proportions given the 60 cm long femur).
Also found were decorated ceramic sherds and some vessels in excellent conditions as well as some bronze razors and a votive sword.
On the eastern slope of the hill are the remains of an extensive village.
We are looking forward to the resumption of the excavations, to give us other similar emotions and that the nuraghe is secured ,for the organized and guided enjoyment of visitors , especially after the recent fires that affected its surroundings.

Sa Sedda 'e sos Carros, Oliena
"Literally means 'point of passage of the carts,' a name dating back to the charcoal collecting activities that characterized the site in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a Nuragic complex of exceptional architecture and engineering, created at the time of metalworking and linked to the cult of water, a precious element in the arid limestone environment of the Supramonte, the Sardinian 'dolomites'.
The village of sa Sedda 'e sos Carros is set in the wild valley of Lanaittu, a spectacular natural backdrop within the territory of Oliena in the province of Nuoro. It's reachable from the road that leads (going towards Dorgali) also to the national monument of the karst spring su Gologone and to the gorgeous caves of sa Oche e su Bentu and the Village of Tiscali...It was a time when man learned to mine and forge metals (bronze and iron), from which artifacts found in the many circular and oval huts that make up the village. One dwelling sticks out in terms of its singular architecture and ritual function: it is the 'fonte,' a circular room with interior walls made of two-toned squared blocks of white limestone and dark basalt and with a carefully worked floor. On the walls in high relief mouflon heads are carved with a hole in them through which water, which came from the channel carved in the wall thickness, gushed into the round monolithic basin located at the center of the floor.
Near the hut you will see a large circular stepped structure: this was the basin for ritual ablutions, religious involving the use of sacred water. This structure changed its destination over time, becoming a storage room for bronze objects waiting for a new processing cycle..." (Sardinia Tourism).

Photos of the site are by Pasquale Pintori, Maurizio Cossu and Lucia Corda. The image of the bronze figures refers to the details of a taurine protome belonging to a bronze foil askos and the deer protome of a model ship, also found at Sa Sedda 'e sos Carros.

Nuraghe Corbos (lit. “of the crows”), stands at the base of a steep ridge separating the Silanus Plateau from the Ottana Plain, whose chimneys are in view crowned by the mountains of Sarule, Gavoi and the peaks of the Gennargentu. It is a well-preserved and well-built single-tower Nuraghe of medium-sized basalt stone arranged in rows. It stands on a circular plain, on the surface of which there are also traces of giant's tombs' (broken stelae, worked ashlars). From here come the bethyls currently found in the courtyard of the small church of Santu Larentu in Silanus. The monument has a markedly truncated-conical profile, with a slight tendency to become vertical in the last rows. (Municipality of Silanus).
Photos of the Corbos nuraghe, in Silanus, are by Giuseppe Csoddu Soddu, Bibi Pinna, Romano Stangherlin, Alex Meloni and Nicola Barbicha Tornello.
