Our Story
The Impero Project aims to investigate the changes occurred in the Mediterranean economy from the late Etruscan period until the 9th c. CE with a particular focus on the Roman south Etruria. The Project is carried out by the Department of Classics of the University at Buffalo (SUNY - USA) in collaboration with Michigan State University. Local partnerships include the Ass. Cult. Odysseus, the Commune of Civitella Paganico and the Tenuta di Monteverdi.
Drawing from the results of the Alberese Archaeological Project, this research aims to analyze the tight relationship between economy and riverine connectivity through the archaeological investigation of a series of Roman to Early Medieval sites along the flow of the river Ombrone.
Its scientific approach is multidisciplinary, combining archaeology and material culture studies with landscape and environmental analysis, bioarchaeology, petrography, the study of written sources and historical maps.
