Matera, Italy is one of the oldest, continuously inhabited places on the planet. With 9,000 years of history, this unique cave city is jaw dropping.

But, in the 1950’s is was once considered one of the poorest places in Europe and unfortunately the residents of the Sassi has no running water, electricity or sanitation - trigger the government to relocate inhabitants to safer areas.

Today, the ancient Sassi di Matera has become one of Italy’s most incredible travel destinations after a massive revitalization and restoration effort.

From abandoned cave homes to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Matera is proof that history can be brought back to life. 🇮🇹
