Hope you’re having a fantastic day today! We’re here to talk about how nutrition relates to your eye health. Your eye sight is, like most things, variable depending on the lifestyle choices you make.
While yes, you are typically either born with good eyes or born with eyes that may not be in optimal condition right from the very start, the little things that you do on a day to day basis can influence how quickly your eyes begin to deteriorate. Essentially, you’re dealt a hand of cards that determine your eye health potential and it’s up to you to maximize it.
So what can you do?
Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition.
The foods you eat each day will have a dramatic influence on eye health, so it pays to get your diet in check. Eating for weight loss is not necessarily the same as eating for eye health so don’t think that just because you’re tracking calories and eliminating sugar, you’re doing what you need to improve your vision.
You need to be eating certain foods that contain nutrients that will really help your eye health go that extra mile. Let’s look at three such foods right now.
Salmon
Salmon is hands down one of the healthiest foods you could eat for just about every element of your well-being. The thing that makes salmon so beneficial is it’s high omega-3 fatty acid content, which is critical for keeping macular degeneration risks low and maintaining good vision.
Salmon also provides a hearty dose of protein as well, which is important for new cell turnover in the body.
Kale
Next up on the list of eye health boosters is kale. What makes kale so special, apart from the fact that this is one of the most powerful superfoods you can put into your body is the two nutrients, lutein and xeaxanthin. These are plant pigments that help to reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts, so are essential for maintaining good eye health.
Not a fan of kale? No problem. There are other green vegetables that contain these compounds as well including broccoli, peas, and avocado’s.
The great thing about kale however is that it’s also very low in total calorie count, so it’s an easy add to your diet if you are someone who’s watching your body weight.
Eggs
Finally, don’t overlook eggs. Many people are scared to eat eggs because of the cholesterol they contain but as long as you are in good health standing already, there’s nothing wrong with adding one or two eggs to your daily diet plan.
It’s important that you don’t toss the egg yolks because the yolk is where most of the nutrients are found and what will help you best maximize your eyesight.
Here again, egg yolks are rich in lutein and also contain a good dose of vitamin A as well, which can help you avoid night blindness.
So there you have three great foods to get into your diet if you hope to boost your eye health in the long run. Are you missing out on any of these? If they’re not currently making their way into your diet plan, now is the time to get them in there.
