excavation, even in contaminated or radioactive environments. Nitrex adheres to the rigorous EU/82/CE “Seveso II” 1996 Directive for its health and safety planning and risk asses

sment. The Seveso II Directive imposes substantial obligations upon explosive engineers to use complex data sets,
algorithms and threshold reference values in order to quantify blasting effects, all with an eye toward the avoidance of any major accident. All explosives and energetic materials called out in any Nitrex blasting design is scrutinized by Nitrex in its “HazOp” (HAZard and OPerability) analysis to
understand any adverse probability of occurrence and to identify all mitigation models. Nitrex also undertakes a “fault tree analysis” for the purpose of calculating the reliability of its system parameters and provide a logical representation of possible results following an explosion or fire. Nitrex plans for perfection, but prepares

*SDF Webbinar: Demolition with explosives of bridges out of their lifecycle - Thursday 25th of April 2024 at 19:00 CET*
In the webinar will be exposed the technical background of the decay (faster than foreseen) of resistance of the reinforced concrete bridges (which are the vast majority of the road and railway bridges in service), which is causing end of their "life cycle".
Also given will be data on the entity (some 30% of the length in western countries is out of their life cycle) and relevance of this situation in term of safety and vulnerability for the modern society.
Than the basic engineering concepts to approach a bridge demolition will exposed, teams specialization, machinery and explosives used.
Some examples of bridge demolition will be shown in video and commented.
Also explained will the environmental impact induced in terms of vibrations, overpressure in air (seldom relevant), fragmentation (debris throw), and dust, which are parameters guiding the decision-making process when a decision on the demolition technique is to be taken between conventional demolition and explosives demolition.
Roberto Folchi is a mining engineer and geologist, founder and 95% shareholder of NITREX s.r.l., a company in the explosives engineering sector that operates in demolition, underwater excavation, tunnel excavation, and controlled demolition with explosives. In 40 years of activity, he has among many other things, demolished 116 road bridges with explosives.
