Can’t travel to every campus? You’re not alone — and that’s okay.
Here’s how to make informed college decisions without expensive road trips:

Talk to current students
Surveys show the single most valuable part of any campus experience—virtual or in‑person—is talking to real students. Ask about everyday life, not just the fun events.

Use high-quality virtual tools
Look for 360° tours, interactive maps, student blogs, and live chats. University of Michigan’s virtual tours let you explore even areas that in-person visits often skip. Although you can’t get the real feel as if you’re there, you will be able to see how the campus looks.

Watch TikToks & Instagram reviews
Authentic student content often gives you the real vibe, sometimes more than scripted campus tours.

Visit only your top choices (if you can)
On-campus visits matter most for decisions you’ve earned, post-acceptance, or final contenders.

Timing is everything
Try to visit during a weekday or academic term if possible, so you can see what it looks like when people are around and get the real feel how it would be living and studying there.

Bottom line for parents & students:
✅ You don’t need to visit every campus.
✅ Use virtual tours + authentic student voices to explore your long list,
✅ Then, consider in-person visits for top contenders for the final decision-making step.
We help families create effective campus visit strategies, virtual and in-person, to save time, money, and stress.

What’s a typical day really like at boarding school?
If you’re imagining strict rules and zero free time, think again.

Here’s what daily life actually looks like at most modern boarding schools 👇

🕘 7:30 AM – Wake-up & breakfast
Students start the day on campus — no commute, just time for morning routines, socializing, and fueling up.

📚 8:30 AM – Classes begin
Academic schedules are structured, with small class sizes and highly engaged teachers who also live on or near campus.

🥗 12:30 PM – Lunch & break
Meals are shared in community — time to relax, recharge, and connect with peers and staff.

🏃 Afternoon – Clubs, sports, creative time
After classes, students explore interests: debate, coding, football, drama — all on-site, all guided.

📖 Evening – Study hours & downtime
Dedicated quiet time for homework, tutoring, or winding down. Dorm staff and mentors are there for support.

🌙 Lights out – Rest & reset
With structure, community, and supervision, students gain independence with guidance.

What surprises most parents?
It’s not just academics — it’s a balanced environment where students grow emotionally, socially, and personally.

This is a generalized but accurate representation based on the daily structure of many leading boarding schools. Of course, every school has its own rhythm, and we help you find the one that’s right for your child.

Thinking about summer school for your child? Start early — seriously.
The best programs often fill up 6 to 9 months in advance. 🗓️

Here’s what the typical application process looks like: 👇
1. Research & match (Aug–Nov)
Explore academic vs. enrichment programs, locations, topics, and duration.
(Need help? That’s our specialty.)

2. Application (Nov–Feb)
Many programs require:
• A short motivation letter
• School transcripts or grades
• Teacher recommendation
• Sometimes even an interview

3. Acceptance & logistics (Feb–Apr)
Once accepted, you’ll confirm participation, complete paperwork, and arrange travel or visas (if abroad).

Bonus tip:
Some competitive programs close by December, so planning in the fall gives your child the widest range of options.

At Career Paths, we help families find the right-fit program and guide them through every step of the application. Because summer can be more than a break, it can be a turning point.

Can my child use AI for their college essay? Here’s what’s allowed—and what’s off-limits:

✅ Brainstorming & grammar-checking are fine.
Using AI to spark ideas, outline thoughts, or correct grammar is generally accepted. Even Caltech encourages this kind of support.

❌ Letting AI write your draft is a no‑go.
Schools like Caltech, Brown, and many others explicitly forbid using AI to outline, draft, or write any part of your essay, and this crosses into plagiarism.

⚠️ Admissions officers can often spot AI writing.
AI-generated essays tend to feel bland, repetitive, or overly polished, lacking the student’s unique voice. Essays that feel “sterile” raise red flags. Only you can share your authentic story.

One-third of students used AI in 2023–24—and some misused it.
A Foundry10 survey showed that 33% of applicants used AI; around 6% had it write their essay. Those are risky waters we advise against.

Suggestions for parents & students:
Yes—AI is a great tool.
✅ Great for brainstorming, catching errors, or getting grammar help.
❗️But the story, voice, structure, those must come only from you.

At Career Paths, we help students use tools wisely, without losing their voice.

Should your child take the SAT or ACT in 2025? Here’s how to decide:

1. Understand test‑optional isn’t test‑free
Over 1,000 U.S. colleges are still test‑optional, but many will prompt you to submit scores later if you initially skip them. Better to prep and not need it than the opposite.

2. Match the test to your child’s strengths
• SAT: Slightly more time per question, strong in math & critical reading.
• ACT: Includes a science section; faster-paced with more questions. No admissions preference—choose the one that feels easier for your student.

3. Take practice tests early
A full-length SAT and ACT diagnostic in the spring of junior year helps identify the better fit, and leaves time to retest if needed.

4. Think about scholarships & admissions
Strong scores still unlock merit‑based aid, and some reinstated test policies make scores mandatory at selective schools.

✔️ What parents can do now:
• Encourage your child to take one diagnostic SAT and one ACT.
• Evaluate which test suits their strengths.
• Plan to prep and test in spring junior year—then retake if desired.

Some schools receive over 50,000 applications a year — and only admit 3–6%.

It’s not just about being smart. It’s about being strategic.

The right application strategy includes:
- Choosing the right schools for you
- Knowing when and how to apply
- Standing out with essays and activities that speak louder than numbers

Did you know?
A powerful personal essay can tip the scales — even if your grades aren’t perfect.

Your essay is your voice.

Your chance to say:
This is who I am.
Here’s what I’ve learned.
This is what I care about.

The most memorable essays aren’t about achievements — they’re about growth, self-awareness, and authenticity.

At Career Paths, we help students craft stories that admissions officers remember.

Did you know?
Every year, thousands of students with perfect GPAs and top test scores are rejected from the world’s most selective universities.

Why? Because top schools look at more than just numbers.

They want to see:
Who you are beyond the grades
How you think, grow, and reflect
What you’ve done with your time — and why it matters to you

At Career Paths, we help students build applications that go beyond checkboxes — and tell a story that truly stands out.

What if your child’s dreams don’t match your expectations?

Take a breath. You’re not alone — and this moment can still lead to connection, growth, and
clarity.

Here’s what we recommend:
1. Listen first.
Even if it’s not what you imagined, understanding why they feel strongly about a certain path
opens the door to mutual respect.

2. Ask open questions.
“What do you like about that choice?” “What does success look like to you?” — curiosity over
control builds trust.

3. Reflect on your own expectations.
Sometimes, our hopes for our kids come from our own fears or unfulfilled dreams. That’s
human. Acknowledge it — then refocus on them.

4. Explore the options together.
You can guide without pushing. Help them map out the practical steps and see what it really
takes to get there.

5. Get a neutral perspective.
A professional coach or counselor can help bridge the gap and bring clarity to both sides —
calmly and thoughtfully.

At Career Paths, we help families navigate these conversations with care. Because your child’s
future should feel right — for them and for you.
